Wally Byam Way
A bunch of us went up to Laramie, WY last Saturday to scout out a location for a future rally. While there, we came across a section of sidewalk where someone scratched "WALLY BYAM WAY 1965" in the at the time wet concrete in front of a school! Very cool...but being that Wally died in 1962...it couldn't have been him. Hmmm....
It's my understanding that there were a couple of International Rallies held in Laramie - one being in 1969...but the reason for the "street naming" in 1965 is a mystery...I'm looking into the history and more details on the rallies that were held there.
Just thought you would enjoy the pic ~ pretty cool!

8th International Rally was held in Laramie, Wyoming
Sounds like the parade through town was a big deal...possibly this is where the viewing stands were located.
Shari
P.S. I think the other International in Laramie was in 1969...

Not that I am aware of...it's along South 4th Street, which parallels 287 the "main drag" through town. Although it could have been an honorary temporary naming for the parade during International.

Where's that from? Laramie?
Kinda looks like a Colorado sign...possibly Colorado Springs, site of the 1960 International Rally. Clue: "Pike" = Pike's Peak?

Has to be Jackson Center. Airstream is located on W. Pike in J. Center.

Shari, I'm glad you shared the posting from the Sierra Neveda Unit. These are scans I have made from the estate of Helen Byam Schwamborn.

The Airstream Caravanner Laranie 1965

I have most of the Airstream Caravanner papers.
When I scanned the article it was for information about the See America First Caravan with Lynda Bird Johnson. There is additional columns for the story, they just covered additional rally info.
Art Costello Jr., Nick Charles and myself were the drivers for three 30' Airstreams, with Bonnevilles furnished by Pontiac. One of our stops was the rally in Laramie.
Lynda Bird participated in the WBCCI, 4th of July parade. She rode in her tow vehicle, a covertible.
I encourage all of you to visit the Sierra Neveda webside and look up the info I have provided. I had a deep appreciation for the work that Diane has done in organizing and presenting the letter, magazines, books, papers and many pictured not before seen in print.
The etching is a typical thing to do with a sidewalk. Who did it? I don't know. But it might have been the school to keep the walkway tied into the 1965 rally. Or it might have been Airzorro, riding the wind at midnight, swording a message for posterity.

I have found the Sierra Nevada website to be a great resource, I have logged many a hour there.
I actually found the portion of the article I linked to via a google search...I wasn't able to easily locate it (or the continued page) on the Sierra Nevada website - I looked. I just was wondering if you have a link to the other pages which you (or Diane) can direct me to? More as a resource to find out everything I can about the Laramie International rallies in particular ~

I have a few things, but they haven't been scanned yet. I have set priorities on Wally, my Mother, Caravans, and Airstream.
I will scan a picture from National Geographis that is a great pic of the rally.
