My Wally Byam's Caravan metal plaque arrived today from Vintage Trailer Supply. Thanks Steve, for the fast service.

It looks exactly like my memory remembers it. The red color is spot on.

Since my '63 has running lights front and back, I will have to find a different spot to display it than Wally recommended back in the 50's. As you can see from my avatar, my Dad had his in the correct spot over the front and back windows and under the WBBC number.

You might also note in the avatar that my Dad's plaque is the only one in sight. Even though this was an Airstream rally, I believe the rectangular plaques indicated that you had travelled on a company sponsored caravan. This picture was taken about 1958.

I am also interest in the Wally Byam club as my AS has a roundish sticker also on the front.

Just in case any of you aren't aware of it, the Vintage Airstream Club has an online library of vintage trailer paperwork on their web site. There is a lot of useful stuff there. I'm sure new contributions are always appreciated.

Getting the Numbers and round decal

My 72 Trade Wind has number 16865 and then the round decal above it. Since it's impossible to remove the ghost I might as well get a new set. Tell me how, and any history on the original owner and numbers. Also where do you get the good Sam Park emblam?

At a recent rally, I got an original rectangular stick on decal, from someone that got it new in 1960 and never put it on their trailer. Now I know why the letters stay visable on the aluminum. The letters are shinny, metalic so they keep the body protected till they finally disentergrate. Hard to show in a picture, the nice red and shinny letters.

New Numbers match the old?

If you get a new set of numbers do they match the old ones perfectly?
Since there's no way to remove the ghost letters might as well replace, if I can get the same numbers

56 SofR with Blue embossed Wally Byam

I'm working on a 1956 Sovereign single door with red (not so ghost) numbers '1234'
Think she has Nebraskan origins. Lots of club stickers. Would love to track down a bit of history on her.

Can you tell from the font of the numbers what era they got put on, they look later than mid 50's to me.?

Has a blue plaque front and rear, good level of colour, nice deep etching/embossing.

Also have then on my bubble that belonged to Wally and Stella which are red.

Sam.

Mike,
Very interesting. Thanks.

I wonder how long they owned her. I reckon my oris might in fact be Dorris!

The 1968 Directory is my oldest and Alfred was still in my 1990 Directory but not in my 1992.

The membership numbers are issued to the owners and not to specific trailers so hard to say how long they owned it.

My 1957 Directory does not contain #1234, because the highest number listed is #1209. The 1958 Directory lists #1234 as Hempel. Therefore, it is not likely that #1234 was originally issued to this trailer when she was new.

I am curious about the Wally Byam's Caravan plate below the numbers. First, it is not rivoted on, so is it the mylar sticker version? To tell the difference - Mylar is paper thin as opposed to aluminum panel thickness of the plate. Second, I have never personally seen a red one when they were being originally issued prior to 1962. Is it possible that the red had just faded out leaving blue?

The Wally Byam's Caravan designation indicated that this trailer had been on a Caravan, not just a member of the WBCC.

Great trailer. Congratulations

Correction. I have never personally seen a BLUE one when they were beingin originally issued prior to 1962. Is it possible that the red just faded out to blue?
