The Many Hats of Wally Byam 1900 to 1959

Here are a few additional pictures of Wally with various hats from the age of 3 or 4 to the late 50's.

The picture with the dog is the earliest and he is wearing the strangest of bonnets.

Wally took a bus tour of San Fransico early 1920's.

Wally owned a calliope. He is pictured on it with Stel, late 1940's or early 1950's.

Wally and Stel at a rally eating breakfast wearing their German outfits.

Last but not least is Wally in his African pith helmet.

Enjoy!

Brad,

Very perceptive... it's in the soft round edge shape of the eyes and the nose. The artist of the illustration below has seemed to have infused those same endearing qualities into the character of it's elements.

BTW, Wally is gone nearly 44 years and we are still following.

Don't you wish you had an all-wool NATIONAL ANTELOPE RALLY beret?

I bought this at a yard sale years ago, before I knew much of anything about Airstreams or the WBCCI. Now I just gotta sign up for the rally, held each fall in Medicine Bow, Wyo.

The more I hear and see of Wally the cooler he gets! A real people person, a promoter of peace, travel and adventure. He got right in there and lived large. Good for all the great members out there that really get it. Berets don't make the man, it's what's inside the beret, that matter. (hey I made a pun)

Thanks Dale for all the neat pictures and stories.

Here is a picture of Mike and Dale at DH2. The jacket that Dale is sporting belonged to Wally. Mike is dressed like Mike.

Hi Stella:

Sweet Antelope Rally beret! I see it thoughtfully was made in a color that approaches blaze orange, to make it safer for the backwoods hunters who might otherwise be mistaken for antelope. Nice touch.

I thought this was the official way to wear the beret. Streamlined back with the eye patch over the right eye, like Black Beard wore his.

Honestly, I prefer the Rasta beret, but it clashes with the eye patch.

Here are wool berets in many colors... Beret, European Wool and they are imported from France, so they must be good.

I just looked at a series of photo's of Wally and he wore his beret... All over the place.

The pictures showed the patch ranging from his right temple to over his left eye.

I guess there's no wrong way to wear it.

But why wear one?

Is it.

Some goofy club headwear.

Or

Is it a reminder that the guy that designed airstream trailers traveled the world. Doing more Seeing more and living more so you could too.

There's a lot more to that hat than keeping your head warm.

Personally I think the pith helmet does a slightly better job of expressing the worldliness of the Airstream's travel prowess. It's rugged, protective like the shell of our trailers, and denotes a sense of I'm-ready-for-anything!

Then again, Wally never asked me...

I like the pith helmet - but I have to be careful I don't say it too quickly or Donna might swat me a good one.

It's round like an Airstream (and me), it can be used for protection from sun, rain, and critters. You could mount a small solar panel on top to power up the cell phone, pace maker etc., and it is a lot harder to leave behind in a restaurant or gas station than the other types of hats I tend to forget. It's almost big enough I could put my WBCCI numbers on it too.

I think the beret may just be too hot for me. Now, if I had hair that might make a difference but being as I'm in the fringe stages of my barber visits.....
