I just found these proofs. The first picture shows Wally with the beret in his hand. The second picture shows the crowning.

Sometimes I wonder why everyone wears the beret the way they do. Most Berets are tilted to one side, some people just put them on. Being a Blue Beret in the Civil Air Patrol (requireing members to be accepted to National Blue Beret) I dont know if I could just put on a beret without tilting it to one size, and save and shape it LOL

I tend to wear mine in a more bohemian style. in true wbcci fashion, i have been told at rallies that i'm wearing "wrong".

But how many people wear the blue beret? I have never seen one in person to tell you the truth!

It's a civilian beret, not military. So, there is no right or wrong way to wear it. Direction of slouch is entirely up to the wearer.

Wally's Wearing of the Blue, how Wally wore his beret

I had trouble posting a picture of Wally a few days ago.

If anyone wants to know how to wear a beret, here's Wally and how he wore his.

Also note he's wearing his trademark "Great Coat". You will see him wearing his coat from 1954 t0 1960 in various pictures and activities.

There's something so friendly and Jimmy Durante-esque about Wally. Can't quite put my finger on it, but he seems like the kind of guy I would've followed to the other side of the world, too.

The Many Hats of Wally Byam 1900 to 1959

Here are a few additional pictures of Wally with various hats from the age of 3 or 4 to the late 50's.

The picture with the dog is the earliest and he is wearing the strangest of bonnets.

Wally took a bus tour of San Fransico early 1920's.

Wally owned a calliope. He is pictured on it with Stel, late 1940's or early 1950's.

Wally and Stel at a rally eating breakfast wearing their German outfits.

Last but not least is Wally in his African pith helmet.

Enjoy!

Brad,

Very perceptive... it's in the soft round edge shape of the eyes and the nose. The artist of the illustration below has seemed to have infused those same endearing qualities into the character of it's elements.

BTW, Wally is gone nearly 44 years and we are still following.
