Vac? Val? Hunters?

I'm a brand new Vintage A/S owner and and am really into preserving the nostalgia of things. I just took ownership of a 1971 Trade wind that has the red numbers on it (WBCCI numbers that I have recently found out). I would like to keep the numbers for my own in order to keep that classic feel. My dilemma is that in this day and age I am very much concerned with getting value for my money. The membership fee is not really an issue but more what comes with that fee, I have been reading alot of threads about WBCCI and regional units and have heard both ups and downs. I am a 45 year old guy with a young family and would love to be involved in a couple trips a year (after I refurb mine of course). Big questions, what is VAC, VAL and Hunters list? Should I be a member at large with WBCCI or join a unit? How do I know what unit is for me, I may be mistaken but I think there is only 3 members in the Arizona unit. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

AZ,

We are very happy with our WBCCI unit, El Camino Real. I would suggest that you talk to some of the 4 Corner Unit folks, there are several in the Phoenix area and on this forum. The VAC is the Vintage Airstream Club their web site is The Vintage Airstream Club, the VAL is an email list, formerly run by the VAC but now run by Tom Patterson, you can subscribe to it from the VAC site, Hunter's List is on Yahoo it is moderated by Hunter Hampton and it is an email list also. Hunter's list can be reached at AirstreamList : The original Airstream discussion list.. I am sure that there are more than three members of the Arizona unit, there may only be three here. We have almost 100 El Camino Real members, but less that 10 are on this forum and less than 5 active here. Just because they are not on this forum does not mean that they are not good people and worth knowing.

Each list has different members and I find that there is value in all of them.

We will be out with the El Camino Real unit the middle of January and there are usually 25 to 30 trailers at each rally.

Bill

The VAC is the Vintage Airstream Club, it is a intra club of the WBCCI and any member of the WBCCI can join. Since you have a vintage unit, you can join as a regular member. They are a great bunch of folks and I am proud to be a member of that group. They have a Rocky Mountain Rally every year and it is on my list of events to attend soon.

I am not sure what VAL is. Hunter list is a Yahoo group which is a much smaller discussion group then this forum.

The Arizona Unit has a little over 100 members.

The Four Corners Unit is less then a year old and not as large as the AZ Unit, but we are a younger more camping type of Unit. If you are interested, join us at one of our rallies and see if it fits. PM me for more information. In 07 we had several great rallies in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. The big one was at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque where we camped just off of the launch field for 4 nights. Everyone had a great time.

You can contact WBCCI Headquarters ans see if the number you want is available. It has to be inactive for 2 years before it can be reissued.

Great info, thanks. I will be trying to get to the Picacho pass event this month but I'll have to come without my A/S . I am really excited about getting started and hope to have mine ready by the time Nascar rolls around again. I do like the idea of joining a unit so I will do further checking around to find the one for me. I think this forum is outstanding and will be sure to participate as ofte as possible.

Welcome aboard! These guys pretty much answered your questions, (quite well I might add) but I want to extend a hearty welcome (I hope!) to the VAC as well! If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact me either here, through a PM or email ~

Your questions have pretty well been answered above, but like the rest I want to extend my welcome to the vintage Airstream community.

By all means do join VAC, which is a great bunch with fun rallies.

You could join WBCCI as a member at large, but even if you don't find a local unit to your liking, I would suggest joining either the Washington DC Unit (WDCU) or 4CU as the dues are cheaper than the Member at Large surcharge and you will have the opportunity to vote.

I also urge you to sign up for the Vintage Airstream List (VAList)

Vintage Airstream List Index Page

There is a lot less activity there than on the Web forums but in my experience the quality of the advice is usually excellent.

See you down the road,

Nuvi
