This is my first post in Airforums, so please let me know if this post belongs somewhere else.
The USS Hornet is hosting Splashdown, one of our biggest events of the year, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the United States reaching the moon. Buzz Aldrin will be attending as our featured speaker. So, you ask what does this have to do with Airstream? We have the original Airstream Mobile Quaratine Facility that was used by the Apollo astronauts 40 years ago after we picked them up out of the ocean. We actively exhibit the MQF next to our Apollo and Gemini capsules. We would like to invite anyone who's interested in making us a point of interest in your rallying trips. We have lots of space on the naval base but no hook-ups as far as I know.
Our website is at www.uss-hornet.org. We are located at 707 W. Hornet Dr, Alameda, CA 94501.
Proud Airstream owner of 40 years,

p.s. if anyone wants to chat with me on the coordination required to be one of your rally points or conduct a ship tour, please contact me.
Thats awesome! We used the Hornet to host a 2 day meeting a few years back and everyone loved it! We met in the mess hall and had docents giving tours between sessions. I think it took weeks to get that smell out of my clothes..
I will make it a point to come by.
We know that mo/ho and it was great to see it again during the Hubbel mission.
Mike,
I think you are confusing the Classic motor home conversion that NASA still uses to transport the Astronauts to launch and from recovery, and the Lunar Quarantine Facilities that were placed on the recovery ships. Those were essentially Airstream trailers with no wheels or axles, mounted on pallets. There were several of them. I've seen one, but don't remember where.

Ooops, I've never seen a pic of those; anyone have any?

Hello feliciadsl and welcome to the forums! I've had the honor of getting to know a CV-12 plank owner. I never knew about hangar deck catapults until talking with him. He sailed with her right back to the west coast after she buried her nose in one of Halsey's Typhoons in June '45. He was a plane engine mechanic and didn't step foot off the Hornet for 16 straight months.
And I went on to become the most rapt follower of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Lives come full circle. Best wishes for your event!
