Hmmm...I can certainly understand not wanting to deface the beautiful symmetry of the end caps but think I like the idea of the next generation of ghost numbers that I may have created by putting my big red numbers on my 20. I plan to go to Escanaba in 2017 because it's so close to home but that's probably the only WBCCI activity we'll ever do. I just love the numbers!

We believe that the big red numbers are part of owning an Airstream. It is understandable that some folks have difficulty with the organization and others have the desire to maintain their coach in pristine condition. The frequency of 2ftitis and the financial ability of many to change trailers to meet their current preference adds to the trend. Also believe that linking the number to the individual instead of the trailer adds to the problem. While ghost numbers add to the character for some, they are a flaw to others. We rationalize the issue by planning to own Glimmer until she has outlived us. Who knows if she will be a family tradition or someone else's, but since we will not take the numbers with us, they can remain part of her and need not be a ghost.

What ever your choice, enjoy traveling and using your coach. Smiles are good. Pat

It doesn't generally work that way. The Big Red Numbers™ belong to you, not to the trailer, and there is no guarantee that the new owners of your trailer will be able to get your numbers.

It does happen sometimes that a new member with an old trailer can get the same numbers that were on the trailer before, but your membership number will be held in abeyance for a couple of years after you leave the club before they're re-issued to someone else.

But it's a nice thought anyway.

We just had a very positive experience through our connection to WBCCI.

We were looking for an inspection out of state and had already posted here in the forums and contacted the members listed as inspectors. We also contacted a local Airstream Dealership along with a mobile Rv repair business. None of those avenues panned out and we had decided not to move forward.

We then sent an email to the area WBCCI group and explained that we were looking for a inspector or just someone willing to be our eyes .

We got a nice email back from the unit, then a member volunteering to go take a look at this "for sale unit".

We got a great inspection and are planning on meeting a very nice new friend.

Certainly worth our annual dues this year.

Met a lovely couple today in the Phx area towing a 2 yr old 30 footer from Colorado.

They were NOT aware of Wally Byam, WBCCI or Airforums.

They were enjoying early retirement, enjoying visiting the various grandkids and happy as clams.

Airstreamers are a diverse and varied lot just like everything else.

Great !!!

WE used the plexi approach for our numbers for years - putting it up at WBCCI events but succumbed to pressures and put them on the skin of our 2015. We didn't renew and have trepidation about removing the numbers without damaging the clear coat / ghosting.

Hi Jerry:

Interesting that you didn't renew with WBCCI if you don't mind is it possible to ask why? We have been wrestling with possibly some of the same issue.....

Thanks

Doug

The previous owners of my Safari had owned 4 Airstreams over almost 40 years. They had never been a member of the WBCCI and never been to an Airstream rally. They joined Airforums expressly to sell there trailer. He was a retired lawyer and she was a Nurse. They have traveled and camped all over the US, Mexico and Canada with their Airstreams. In their 70's they decide that draging a trailer around had become too difficult and were looking for a suitable MOHO to continue their travels.

A lot of people think the trailers with numbers on them are rental units.

Really?
That never occurred to me.
I guess I thought it was common knowledge.
I assumed incorrectly that all Airstream enthusiasts knew what the red numbers are.
I do get asked quite often by non-Airstreamers what the red numbers are and I explain it to them.
The only rental Airstreams I am aware of have a blue stripe (other than the Airstream blue stripe) and are towed by Tahoes. I've never seen one in real life, only on the internet.
Other brands of rentals have markings like 1-800-RV4-RENT or something similar.
Some rentals have no markings at all.

Yep. That's it. Airstream2go.
I couldn't remember the name and I was too lazy (or busy) to Google it.

Won't take long long to pay off the steeply discounted prices he must have paid for those trailers as he left Airstream. I would bet a dime to a donut that he paid less than dealer cost. Not so sure on the tow vehicles, though.

Five or six two week rentals at peak season billing would pay for the replacement Airstream.....
