Lightbulb The Ancients

I have been trying to come up with a respectful way to classify the the older generation of the ruling party of the WBCCI, you know the Lawrence Welk types.

At dinner last night with a group of Wbcci members Dave suggested the referrence of "Ancients"

The Indian culture always referred to their oldest generation as the ancients.

Definitions of ancient

1. [adj] - belonging to times long past

2. [adj] - very old ( like set in their ways )

I thought it would fitting when referring to those WBCCI RULERS .

The "Ancients"; I like that, descriptive, yet respectful.

The "Anchients" has a notation of not only being Long In The Tooth, but also wise beyond those of today. Keep working on it. "Anchients" does not apply today, maybe fifteen years ago, but to today.

I was tought when I was growing up, to be very respectful of my elders - that ment anyone older than myself. They at least deseved that much respect.

Therefore, may I suggest you just call them "Sir" and "Ma'am"
and possibly try to show them the respect they deserve.

For what it's worth

Reminds me of the meaning of the term "Anastazi" -- Ancient People or Ancient Ones.

From Wikipedia:

Anasazi as a cultural label

The term "Anasazi" was established in archaeological terminology through the Pecos Classification system in 1927. Archaeologist Linda Cordell discussed the word's etymology and use:
"The name "Anasazi" has come to mean "ancient people," although the word itself is Navajo, meaning "enemy ancestors." [The Navajo word is anaasází (<anaa- "enemy", sází "ancestor").]............

Maybe we can call them the Anastazi? A little inside joke.

I'm almost there!

How about "the shining foreheads" or "the blue hairs".

All seriousness aside, No matter what name is proposed guaranteed someone will be offended. When I think of "ancient" I also think of decrepid and obsolete!

PS no matter how old I get I will never be "a Lawrence Welk type".

Hummm. So the descendents of the so-called "Anasazi" (understandably) objected to the use of the term "Anasazi," so the relevant authorities came up with a new term, "Ancestral Pueblans."

So maybe we could follow the lead. Ancestral Airstreamers.

how about...

Would Geezers work as a title for the folks you describe?

For example: "Would Sir Geezer Johnson please refrain from leaving his teeth in the beer glass?" or "Shall we wake up Madam Geezer Freestone for her 3 o'clock medication?"

I think it fits just fine. Shows a lot of class as well as respect...don't you think?

Thats the way to do it. Lets not forget that its not the age of these members but thier attitude that matters. So don't let blue hair or wrinkles lead you to lump young thinkers and old sticks in the mud all in one group.

Going,
Karma for a proper response.
Lipets, I'm not flaming you - I'm sure there is more than a little humor in your post.

Just a reminder for us all. Don't stoop to their level.
Even those who are close to us can become cranky, etc as age creeps up on them with it's associated problems. Most of us will one day be in their shoes - although getting cranky IS a choice.

As an "ancient" by many of the terms here, may I suggest something denoting people that embrace outmoded ways? At least to describe the non-progressive people?
"Traditional Conservatives".
Most all of them have been around the block with the club long enough to give them the respect due an elder...Come to think of it, that would be another good term, "elders".

I think it's unfair to even NEED a term to use when lumping all of the old members together. Why do they need to be lumped together anyway? There are a lot of people in the club who are older than me, some who have been in it forever, some who just joined, some who care a great deal about the club, and some who just go to an occasional rally, some who are open and welcoming to new members and new ideas, and some who are a bit more set in their ways. How can you cover these people with one banner?

An "us vs them" attitude does nothing to help the club, or to get what you want done. There is no need to lump everyone together under one label. How about we just continue to treat everyone as individuals, respectfully, and with an open and positive attitude?

Plus I don't think 'ancient' really describes most of the people I've met in the WBCCI - many are older than me, but they're still more active than I am! I sure hope I'm still active & traveling when I am in my 70's & 80's like many of them are!

I was also taught to use 'sir' & 'mam'. You have no idea how much ribbing I took at our laid back high school where kids called the 'cool' teachers by their firstnames.

I think whenever you start trying to label people you get in trouble, because you might accidentally lump people together without actually getting to know them. I've met a LOT of really nice folks in the club!

How about "The Kids"

Seeing as my parents and grandparents (the ones who are still around) wish they were all kids again, why not call our elders "The Kids". I think it fits wonderfully without disrespecting them.

The "Silver Streamers" seems sensible as a moniker for the folks that have what most of us will be lucky to have- Silver hair and a Silver lair.

Great First Post - Welcome to the AirForums. I know a few Seniors that qualify for that title.
