Suggestions for Charleston SC Campgrounds

I would like to travel to the Charlston South Carolina Area.
I am looking for any suggestions of nice campgrounds preferrable on or near the water.

Thanks in advance!

We stay in Charleston two months each year at Oak Plantation Campground. It is very well maintained, clean facilitiest and close to the city. There is another nice county campground on James Island but they don't have the improved roads and ability to stay a month at a time like Oak Plantation. You will enjoy your visit to Charleston. It's one of the best cities in the South with lots to do.

best place to camp on the ocean

The best place to camp on the ocean near Charleston that I know of is Edisto Beach State Park. They have water and electric sites right at the beach or on the salt marsh. This location is about an hour drive to down town Charleston.

Not too far away, but another "must see" place, is Hunting Island State Park. It is south of Beaufort, SC. The state park has campsites right on the ocean and there is a historic lighthouse too. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse, you can see for miles. Also, visit the ruins of Old Sheldon Church.

James Island County Park

We've stayed at James Island County park twice. It's one of our favorite campgrounds. It's about 15 minutes from Charleston. There's actually a shuttle that you can ride into town from the campground. Beautiful park!!

My vote goes to James Island. Have stayed there several times. And at one time they had a nice t-shirt with an Airstream on it.

I'm going to jump in on this one, too. I've stayed there twice, and love it!

Not Oaks, they would not return my deposit even though I cancelled the very next day after making the reservation because of illness in the family and it was three weeks before the date of arrival.
Definitely James Island would be my choice. Good sites. Nice park.

We recommend the KOA campground on US 17, just north of Mt. Pleasant. It has nice sites on a lake with pool, etc. It is very convenient to downtown Charleston. Seacure, 27-foot Overlander, 07 Yukon 6.2.
