Hi Rob,
You've got an interesting '88 32' Excella that was obviously owned by a long time WBCCI member before it became the mobile recuiting office. I can say that before doing any research because the five stars above the number 7629 each represent 5 years in the club. That means the owners were members for between 25 years (5 stars) and 29 years (6 stars minus one year) when they owned the Excella.

Well, when I got to looking, my research backed this up. #7629 was first assigned in 1962, but I am missing many 1960's Directories, so the first one I have that lists #7629 is 1966. This Directory lists membership as of 12/31/1965 and lists a William and Antia Norwood, of Crownsville, MD for #7629. Following along, the Norwoods are listed in Melbourne, FL in 1995, the last year William is listed. Anita is last listed in 2009 in Stevensville, MD. The Norwoods are listed for two caravans, one in 1975 and one in 1985, both before your Excella was built.

So what can we tell from this? The Norwoods joined WBCCI somewhere between 1962 and 1965. Assuming they bought your '88 Excella new in late 1987 or early 1988, they would have been members for between 22 and 26 years at the time. This suggests that the Norwoods were likely the original assignees for #7629 in 1962. The 5 stars make sense. They obviously upgraded Airstreams over the years, maybe more than once, but at least once in about 1988. When they sold it is anybodys guess. Do you have any idea how long it was a mobile recuiting office?

I suspect the second door was added when it became the modile recruiting office because while there was a double door option in 1988, the location was different than on your trailer - it would have been further rearward in place of the curb side bedroom window.

In any case, it is a unique Airstream that was owned by long time members. I hope you enjoy it!

Hi Crystal and Alan,
#29835 was first assigned in 1974 to Henry and Ann Rivard of Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada, no caravans. #29835 is then unlisted in 1976 and I am missing a 1977 Directory.

#29835 is then assigned in 1978-89 to Max and Hilda Ueltzen of Kennett, MO (1978) and Salem, MO (1989), no caravans. #29835 has been unassigned since 1990.

Given that you are from Missouri (MO), I tend to think that the Ueltzens owned your '72 Sovereign, although I have no way to rule out the Rivards.

In any case, have fun with it!

Came without a title. I ran the above numbers thru the Sherrif's office and the trailer came back clean.

OK Judy, one last one tonight!

I can't tell anything about prior owners from the serial number of the trailer, but I can tell you that WBCCI #20832 was first assigned in 1968, which is appropriate for your '68 Tradewind. This number was assigned to Samuel and Elizabeth Jones of Shreveport, LA. The Jones' are last listed in my 1973 Directory, no caravans.

I am missing a 1974 Directory, but in 1975, #20832 is assigned to James and Elizabeth Hayn of Westwood, NJ. James and Terry Hayn are last listed in Midland Park, NJ in 1978. #20832 is then unassigned in 1979-current.

I tend to think the Jones' owned your Tradewind because it was made the year #20832 was first assigned. It is less likely that the Hayns owned your Tradewind.

That's all I got. Enjoy!

(P.S. That was one too many tonight - maybe I'll take a few days off.)

Joe,

I appreciate your help and would like to echo all the other posts saying thanks for your willingness to do research for others.

I was intrigued so I did one google search and unfortunately the very first hit came back with this:

Anita was born on April 1, 1919 and passed away on Friday, August 7, 2009.

Anita was last known to be living in Stevensville, Maryland. She was formerly from Melbourne, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband William.

Services will be private.

90 years old and it appears she and her husband were members to the very end.

I honestly don't know when the AS was purchased by the Canadian DND and it could have been transferred throughout the country prior to being entered as surplus so the hopes of learning that story is unlikely which is unfortunate. I do wonder how many recruits watched presentations, wrote tests, and signed the final documents inside her though. Where were they stationed, did they fight, and did they give the ultimate sacrifice for their country?

I do know that we will bring her back to life and have many good times with friends and family....

Thanks again,

Rob

This was the second hit. Looks like Mrs. Norwood was VERY involved with rallies.

Thumbs up

Hi Joe,

New here and been given this thread because I asked if anyone had any knowledge of our new pride and joy.

I see you're really busy, but when you have time if you could have a look for #6481 for us we'd love to hear about the history/owners.

We think our 1962 Tradewind came from New Jersey. We've owned her for a month now here in the south of England. We have no paperwork at all so any information is great for us.

Look forward to hearing if you can trace anything - when time allows.

Many thanks

Sara

1984 Sovereign, 27ft, rear bath.
Recent e-mail says our WBCCI # will be 2238 (they have not yet arrived)
We bought it a couple months ago from Marvin and Libby Crane. Current number on the trailer was theirs and is 1305.
Marvin says he bought it from John and Bee Wright. The 7 (that is right, 7) stars on the trailer belonged to John and Bee. Marvin and Libby just never took them off. (see pic) And John may have worked for Airstream. Skye and I are curious as to whether John and Bee were original owners and any caravan info would be great. I did hear they took a few trips to Canada and Alaska but I do not know if that was part of a caravan or just having fun.
The history of these things is soooo fun to find out....Like why is there a great big patch on the side? (see pic) (maybe some things will never be discovered...)
Thank you so much in advance...
Chuck and Skye
Joe, I wanted to proved an update to my original post (#134). I have removed the PO's numbers and the only other imprints I can see would be #428. I would guess this was the number of Mr and Mrs Wright with their 35+ years of membership. Hope it helps a bit with any research you can do. And if they are the original numbers, is it possible to get those numbers reassigned to us so we can bring them back home?

Easy! Probably there's a great big patch on the side because at some point there was a great big hole in the side!

Previous owner did tell me that the original owner had 2 identical trailers, one used for travel, one parked at a park. The one I have is supposed to be the one for travel...

Appreciate the time you take do pull the research!
Hi Keven and Prim Li,
WBCCI #4990 was first assigned in 1961. Unfortunately the first two Directories that I have that list #4990 are 1966 and 1968. In both, #4990 is listed for someone with the last name "King" in the numerical listings, but that person or couple are missing from the alphabetical listings, so I have no more information. This situation typically occurred when someone renewed their membership late. Since the numerical listings were compiled last, sometimes they got in that section, but not in the alphabetical section that had already been completed.

#4990 is then unassigned in 1969 before being reassigned in 1970-75 to William and Eulah Powell of Dubois, WY (1970) and Rock Springs, WY (1975), no caravans.

#4990 is then unasigned in 1976-78 before being reassigned in 1979-96 to Robert and Julette McKinnon of Grand Forks, ND. The McKinnons participated on WBCCI Region caravans in 1982 and 1985 as well as on Airstream Company Caravan 172 - Christmas in Guadalajara Winter 1987.

#4990 was then unassigned in 1997-99 before being reassigned to somone from Saskatchewan, Canada in 2000-2011.

That's all I have. Unfortunately, I can't confirm who may have been assigned #4990 from 1961 to 1965, nor where they lived. I also cannot confirm anything about the Kings, including where they lived from 1966 to 1968. Since you believe your 1960 Overlander has spent most of it's life in Pennsylvania, it seems most likely that none of the other couples I found for #4990 through the years may have owned your Airstream. I guess it will have to remain a mystery for now. Have fun with it!

P.S. Regarding the recangular Wally Byam Caravan decal that is on your Overlander. That was the standard club sticker in the early years before the changeover to the more current round sticker bearing Wally's image. I have seen that sticker on trailers that have no recorded participation on any caravans, so it's presence does not prove your Overlander was on any caravans. Of course, since I have no real member information before about 1970, it is certainly possible your Overlander was on one or more caravans during that time period.

I wish this Forum didn't have a 30 minute limit to make edits. I just noticed a typo in the above post that I cannot fix. The McKinnon's lived in Grand Forks, ND, not Grabs Forks, NC.

From Montana - 1958 Flying Cloud - VIN 8445

New to the world of aluminum but have secretly battled the addiction for 8+ years! Picked up my first Airstream about 3+ weeks ago and was directed to your postings as it was mentioned you could provide some history on it.

I have a 1958 Flying Cloud and the original WBCCI number on the trailer is 4821. It is apparent that the trailer traveled a bit as it has an original rally sticker in the front window (going to try to preserve it during the restoration). The Wally Caravan badges have faded but can be seen beneath the WBCCI numbers. Top of the trailer was painted but when removing the paint the numbers are red as expected. Thank you so much for all your invaluable time!

Thanks Joe!

Regardless if we're ever able to confirm it's linage, this thread is one of my favorites to read. I truly appreciate the time you spend to research thru all the old directories and then type up your findings for everyone to read. Thank you very much!!

Hi Chuck and Skye,
One quick one tonight . . . yours. Seven stars is a lot, but not a record. My "inlaws" have been in the club since 1966 - I should put their ninth star (for 45 years!) on their Airstream this year! And even that is not a record. I personally know people that have been in the club even longer.

Regarding the Wrights, you are on the (w)right track, but John and Beatrice Wright were actually assigned #13428 (not simply "428"). #13428 was first assigned in 1965 and it and the Wrights are first listed in the 1966 Directory that lists membership as of 12/31/1965. At that time, the Wrights were listed as living in Mt. Clemens, MI. The Wrights are last listed in the 2005 Directory in Kerrville, TX. They are listed for just one caravan: #234 - Copper Canyon "Piggy Back Train" 1997. It is certainly possible that they still owned your 1984 27' Sovereign in 1997 and took it on that caravan, but I have no records to be able to prove or disprove it.

And regarding the availability of the Wrights number, #13428 is unassigned in the 2011 Directory, so unless someone joined and requested it earlier this year (highly unlikely), you should be able to get it. You would not be able to get #428, had that been the Wrights number, though, because numbers below 1000 are reserved for various club leaders. In this case, that does not matter. A simple call or email to WBCCI HQ is all it takes to change your number if you wish to do so.

Have fun with with your Sovereign and welcome to the club!

Hi Greg & Linda,
Keeping consistent with my past practices, I will not research the entire history of WBCCI #1927 since that number is not on an old Airstream you have, but instead is the number recently assigned to you. But I am happy to provide a little background on your number . . .

#1927 was first assigned in 1958. The first directory I have that SHOULD list that number is 1960, but #1927 was already unassgined by then. In my next two Directories, 1966 and 1968, #1927 is assigned to someone with the last name "Bartner" in the numerical listings, but not the alphabetic listings, so they must have been a late renewal those years and I have no further information.

Finally in the 1969 Directory, #1927 has been reassigned to C. Wright McKnight of Milledgeville, GA. C. Wright McKnight is last listed in the 1985 Directory, then in Poughkeepsie, NY with two caravans listed:
  • 78 - Yucatan Winter 1971
  • 87 - Western Canada Summer 1972
#1927 was unassigned in 1986 and I did not check any more recently, but I am sure such a low number has been reassigned one or more times between then and the recent reassignment to you.

#1927 is a "cool" number - enjoy it! And here is a big "Welcome to the club!" Definitely try out some WBCCI events to get maximum enjoyment out of your membership. Caravans are a lot of fun if you have the time to try one out.

Quick question! How possible would it have been that my 1977 never had numbers at all? And if you don't have numbers are there other way of finding what numbers they might have been?? And if u sign up for the numbers cam you pick your own?

If your trailer has no numbers, the previous owners were either not members of the WBCCI or if they were, they did not put the numbers on the trailer. With out the numbers to work with, there is very little hope of tracing the history of the trailer.

You can contact the office of the WBCCI to see if the number you want is available and have that number assigned when you join.

Joe has a good collection of the annual directories. If you PM him that informaton he could see if they were members.
