#5312 was first assigned in 1961, before your 1966 Airstream was built. Here is how that number has been assigned according to WBCCI Membership Directories over the years:
1962-1997: Wendel & Isabell Jones, Mansfield, OH, caravans 29 - Mexico Winter 1962, 33 - Eastern Canada Summer 1963, & 41 - Pan American Winter 1965.
1998-2000+: Unassigned (did not check further).

From this we can be pretty sure that the Jones' owned your 1966 Overlander, be we cannot be sure when. Did they upgrade to it when new in 1966, or did they upgrade to it as a used trailer at a later time. In any case, a 1966 Airstream is too new to have been used on any of their caravans.

That's all I got. Enjoy your 1966 Overlander. We miss our first Airstream from time to time. It was also a 1966 Overlander 26d.

Thank you kindly

Given that this is years after your 1957 Overlander was built, we cannot just assume that is when the number was applied to your Airstream. In any case, here is how #19207 has been assigned over the years:

1968-69: George & Beatrice Steckhahn, Menomenee Falls, WI, no caravans.
1970: Unassigned.
1971-76: Anthony & Mary Korenak, Brookfield, WI, no caravans.
1977: Michael G. & Beatrice Colwell, Menomonee Falls, WI, no caravans.
1978-Current: Unassigned (only spot checked a few directories after 1985)

So what can we guess from this? My guess is that all three couples in Wisconsin owned the same Airstream because of the close proximity of the cities they lived in. It must have been your 1957 Overlander.

I do wonder if Beatrice Colwell was Beatrice Streckhahn. If the Streckhahns dropped out of the club for 1970 because George passed away, I suppose Beatrice could have remarried re-bought the Overlander, and rejoined the club. Of course, this is only speculation. I have absolutely no proof. It just seems too much of a coincidence that two different women with the same first name in the same city would be assigned the same WBCCI number just a few years apart. It is possible, just seems unlikely.

Enjoy your Overlander!
Thank you for your time in researching this for us.

I would love some help in finding some history on our Airstream. We imported it into Australia 3 years ago and apart from the person we bought it from, we don't know anything else. It's a 1960 Tradewind, serial number 24TS0560. Up until recently we didn't think it had ever had numbers, but upon stripping and polishing some very faint ghost numbers appeared. All we can make out at this point is 4--2. I realise this may not be enough info but would appreciate any help if possible. Many Thanks! Amy

Hi,
WBCCI membership number 13359 was first assigned in 1965, well before your 1978 Sovereign was built. After the original assignees did not renew for 1974, #13359 was assigned as follows from 1975 onward:
1975-79: Kenneth B & Dorothy Kelsey, Plainfield, NJ (1975), Hyannis, MA (1979), no caravans.
1980-83: Unassigned.
1984-89: Roscoe & Lillian Brown, Lenox, IA, no caravans.
1990+: Unassigned, but only spot checked a few directories.

So what can we guess from this? It is doubtful that the Kelsey's and Brown's owned the same Airstream given the distance and unassigned years in between them. Given that you are in Alabama, that does make the guess more likely to lean toward a prior owner in either NJ/MA or IA, unless you can find a dealer decal on the trailer. Given that I do not know this detail, I cannot make a guess as to whether the Kelsey's or Browns were the more likely prior owner of your Sovereign, but I will say that it seems unlikely, though certainly not impossible that the Kelsey's would have upgraded to a new 1978 Airstream part way thru their membership period, but then dropped out of the club a couple years later.

That's all I got. Enjoy your Airstream!

Hi Amy,
The serial number 24TS0560 makes your Tradewind a 1961 model that was likely built in December 1960 or January 1961.

A 4-digit WBCCI number starting with a "4" would have been first assigned in late 1960 or early 1961, depending upon what the second digit was. Without the full 4-digit number I don't have enough information to do a search. Sorry.

You might try looking at the front and rear end caps from various angles under various lighting conditions. Some times the ghost outlines are there, but can only bee seen from certain angles. I have seen cases where owners could not see the outlines until they posted endcap photos and I could locate the faint outlines via the photos. Sometimes looking at a photos on a computer screen from various angles helps to locate the outlines.

Good Luck! Enjoy your 1961 Tradewind!

Hi Amy,
per the above message quoted from your PM to me, here is what I found. WBCCI Membership Number 4272 was first assigned in very late 1960. Here is how that number has been assigned according to WBCCI Membership Directories over the years:

1960-84: Kendall & Gladys Howe, Bellevue, Washington (1960-63), Olympia, Washington (1964-84), no caravans (Gladys only in 1984).
1985: Unassigned.
1986-87: Virgil E. Elliot, Bellevue, Washington, no caravans.
1988: Virgil E. & Bette Elliot, Olympia, Washington, no caravans.
1989-2013: Bette Elliot, Olymipa, Washington, no caravans.
2014: Unassigned, did not check further.

So what can we guess from this? First, I will guess that the Howe's bought your late 1960 built 1961 Tradewind in late 1960 and immediately joined WBCCI being assigned #4272. I will also guess that Gladys Howe (or her family) sold an Airstream to Virgil Elliot in 1984 or 1985, because of the close proximity and same WBCCI number. Furthermore, the Elliot's Olympia, WA street address was exactly the same as the Howe's Olympia WA street address. That address is actually in the Washington Land Yacht Harbor Airstream Park. It is possible that Virgil Howe and Gladys Howe were related such that the ownership transfer was via a will rather than a sale, but that is just speculation.

What we can't know, though, is if the Airstream that transferred from Gladys Howe to Virgil Elliot was the 1961 Tradewind. Maybe yes, maybe no. It is certainly possible that the Howe's upgraded to a newer and possibly larger Airstream between 1960 and 1984. Since the club did not keep records of the Airstreams owned by members, I have no way of answering this question.

That's all I got. If you can confirm that the Airstream was bought from Washington state, that might help increase the certainty that the big red numbers were "4272" to something more than 99%.

Enjoy your Tradewind!

The person I have been emailing back and fourth has sent me extra pictures but then I found the same trailer I a different state that had the same number but this time I saw the license plate clear as day

I would really appreciate any help on this. It is a nice trailer I would like to buy

Thank you

Hi Tikihut,
Researching who was assigned the old "big red number" on an Airstream will not help you determine if an ad is legit or a scam. #3916 was first assigned in 1960 and may have been reassigned several times since then. Who knows when that number was put on that trailer. You haven't even indicated the year and model of the Airstream. Those details could narrow it down a bit.

Should the ad prove legit and you purchase the trailer I'd be happy to then look up who that number was assigned to over the years, but each case takes quite a bit of my time to do, so I wont do it in the current situation. Sorry.

Hi,
I'm still very new here so if this isn't the right place to ask this question please let me know.
I see a 2018 Flying Cloud 20FB for sale. It has the red 21509 numbers on the front and back. The salesguy says it was "used only once" and that the previous owner came in and traded it in on a boat. Is there a way I can tell any information about this? My concern is that if the owner bought it and found it had some major problems they may have traded it on on the boat. Is there any way any additional information about this Airstream could be found?

Thanks in advance!
Jon

The Club is very concerned about the privacy of our Members, but it does sound like the member has gone a different direction in his recreational pursuits. We've had some members buy an Airstream just to go on a Caravan, Special Event rally with the club or travel around the US for a year and then sell and go on to something else. No better way to explore the National Parks than an Airstream.

Since this is a new member from 2017-2018 we would not be able to give you their information, I'm sure you understand. The Dealer should give you the name or at least have the member give you a call if they wanted to. Also, any issues should still be covered by Airstreams Warranty. Go ahead, buy the Airstream, join the Club and go camping, you'll love it.

Thanks for the info, I do understand totally. I wasn't so much looking for the person but info on the Airstream. Still considering my options but again wanted to say thanks.
