Hi Bob,
Did you land this "big silver fish" over the weekend? I normally only look up numbers for owners of trailer because of the time involved with doing the research. I don't want to devote time to looking up the information if you did not get the trailer. Please advise. Your request is currently #2 in the queue, so I should be getting to it soon, if you are now the owner.

  • 1966-78: Dr. Walter P. & Viola Streitel, Laguna Hills, CA, caravans 54 - Trans Canada Summer 1967 & 63 - Yucatan February 1969.
  • 1979+: Unassigned, spot checked many, but not all directories up to 2000.
Thus we can guess that it is most likely that the Streitels owned your 1969 Sovereign. They would have joined the club with an earlier Airstream, but could have upgraded to the Sovereign when new in late 1968 or early 1969 or possibly years later as a used trailer. If they upgraded to it when new, it seems likely that they would have taken it on their Yucatan Peninsula caravan. That's all I got. Enjoy your Sovereign!
Wow, that is so interesting. Thank you so much for your time. We are spending a lot of time working on it right now. It has so much of the original fixtures and so on, and we are preserving those, but some things, such as the furniture, appliances and flooring are being updated.

Joe,
We recently purchased a 1963 Safari and we are trying to piece together the history of the trailer. We know that it was brought to Florida in 1976 and has been sitting in a hunt camp in the Ocala National Forest since then. It still has the WBCCI numbers on the rear of the trailer as well as the number shadows of the same number on the front of the trailer. The numbers are 9894. When we were cleaning the trailer after we got it home we found some of the original paperwork in one of the drawers. In the paperwork we found several names on an assortment of receipts with the earliest name being “Stuckey”. We suspect that Mr Stuckey may have been the original owner. There are also shadows of caravan stickers located on the front and rear of the trailer above the club numbers. Any information that you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for all the time and effort that you put into providing this historical club information.

Safe Travels!!
Tim

Hi landyachtmom,
WBCCI #8457 was first assigned in 1963 well before your 1976 Tradewind was built. Here is how #9457 had been assigned since the mid-1970s:
  • 1975: Unassigned, did not check prior.
  • 1976-98: Reinhold & Mary Jane Unger, St. Clair Shores, MI (1975), Punta Gorda, FL (1998), caravans:
    • N11 - WBCCI Post International Rally Caravan 1982
    • 154 - Christmas in Guadalajara Winter 1984
    • 172 - Christmas in Guadalajara Winter 1987
    • 177 - Eastern Canada Summer 1988
    • 181 - The Magnificent Peninsula - Baja 1989
    • 182 - Yukon and Alaska 1989
    • 188 - Mayan Adventure (Yucatan) 1990
    • 204 - Guatemala and Coasts of Mexico 1992
  • 1999+: Unassigned, but only spot checked a few years.
So we can reasonably guess that it was the Ungers that previously owned your 1976 Tradewind, and that they most likely bought it new and immediately joined WBCCI, but we cannot be sure if they owned it the full time they were in the club or if they upgraded to another Airstream at some point. It would seem likely that they used it at least on some of their early caravans and it is interesting to consider the possibility that it could have been on all of the caravans noted above. Of course, there is also the chance that they upgraded before 1982 and it was on none of those caravans. I have no way of determining that. I wonder if you can find any evidence of some or all of the above caravans in or on the trailer?

This was a fun one to research - I think this is the highest number of potential caravans that I have turned up evidence on during one of these "lookups", and quite a variety, too, from Mexico and Central America to Alaska and Eastern Canada, your Tradewind might just be very well traveled.

Make some memories of your own in it. Maybe even take a caravan or two of your own. WBCCI offers dozens of caravan each year should you want to check the club out.

Bob, I'd like to help, but I am putting your inquiry on #20262 on "hold" until you are able to confirm that you actually purchased this trailer, but I'll be happy to look it up when you confirm purchase. That will allow me to better use my time and move on to provide answers for active members.

Hi btmorris,
You are correct that #739 is a low number. The numbers 1000 and below have been reserved from general reassignment and only used for special purposes (officers, etc.) since about 1970, but those assigned such a number before 1970(ish) could keep it as long as they remained in the club. #739 was first assigned in 1957 and here is how it has been assigned over the years:
  • 1957-80: Ed & Aileen Cheesman, Reno, NV, caravans:
    • 11 - Mexico Winter 1957
    • 14 - Oregon Trail Summer 1957
    • 18 - Western Canada Summer 1958
    • 21 - Eastern Canada Summer 1959
  • 1981+: Unassigned (reserved, but unused).
We can be pretty certain that the Cheesmans owned your 1966 Ambassador, but they obviously joined the club with an earlier Airstream which they used on all of their recorded caravans. That's all I got. Enjoy your Ambassador!

Hi CaddyGrn,
#11754 was first assigned in 1964 thus first appearing in the 1965 Membership Directory. here is how #11754 has been assigned over the years:
  • 1965-68: Edward H. & Mary Lang, Yucaipa, CA, no caravans.
  • 1969: Unassigned.
  • 1970-86: James K. & Hazel Rutherford, Flint, MI (1970), Marlette, MI (1986, Hazel only), caravans:
    • R1 - WBCCI Region 2 Caravan Capital (Ottawa) to Capital (Wash D.C) 1972
    • 93 - Western Canada Summer 1973
    • N4 - WBCCI Post International Rally Caravan 1975
  • 1987+: Unassigned, but only spot checked a few years
So what can we guess? Given the unassigned year and distances in between, we can guess that the Langs and Rutherfords probably did not own the same Airstream.

Given that you are in California, the Lang's might be a guess, but that would most likely apply for a California built trailer, so I tend to discount that possibility.

Since you say you have an Ohio built trailer, the Rutherfords become my best guess as prior owners. They may have joined the club shortly after purchasing the Airstream, and if this is true, then there could have been an earlier owner in New York state between 1963 and 1970, but if so, that owner apparently was not a club member unless there are fainter outlines of a different number under the 11754. Of course it could has also gone to New York after the Rutherfords sold it.

If you can provide me the serial number of your 1962 Safari I may be able to determine the name of the dealer that originally ordered it. You can PM me the serial number if you do not want to post it in the open.

That's all I got. Good luck solving the mystery!

H MrRivet,
WBCCI #9894 was first assigned in 1963, thus first appearing in the 1964 Membership Directory. Here is how that number has been assigned over the years:
  • 1964-73: Oscar & Ada Stuckey, Detroit, MI, no caravans.
  • 1974-75: Unassigned.
  • 1976-80: Jay C. & Betty Dent, Saginaw, MI, no caravans.
  • 1981-82: Unassigned.
  • 1983-92: Frank & Ann Skypala, Philadelphia, PA, no caravans.
  • 1993+: Unassigned, only checked a few years, did not check after 2000.
So what can we determine? First the name Stuckey is a match to the paperwork you found making it almost certain that the Stuckeys bought your 1963 Safari new and immediately joined the club.

Is is less clear if the Dents might also be owners. The two unassigned years tend to suggest they were just randomly reassigned a number, yet the relative proximity suggests they could have bought their Airstream from the Stuckeys and requested that number. Even though they maintained a mailing address in Michigan, they could have pulled the trailer to a hunting camp in Florida. Since you seem to know who brought it to Florida, this will either confirm to refute Dent ownership.

The Skypalas seem to be ruled out as possible owners as the trailer was already in Florida according to you.

That's all I got. Glad there is a match on Stuckey and wonder about Dent. Hope you have time to restore the 1963 Safari after you complete the 1948 Liner.

Woo Hoo! I am all caught up. Now just need to shake this cold and get back to other projects.

I just want to remind people of how much work these number searches are for Joe.

None of the past WBCCI numbers are in any database. Joe is thumbing through pages of old paper directories looking for this information.

In all there are currently over 17,000 pages in membership directories, going back to 1955!

Thanks Joe for all the hard work you do!!

Joe,

Thanks so much for all the information! Sorry can't provide the serial number... the frame is super rotten and parts rusted through. It is the shell that is essentially left and use-able. This is a super fixer.... but not our first rodeo. I can PM you the number that is on the side panel that indicates it was made in Ohio, etc. Not sure that is what you need, but it is the serial number they put on California registration....

The trailer was in New York area at some point as it has a dealership emblem on the side of the trailer, so who knows. Anyway, thanks so much, you are awesome! If we can return the favor, just ask!

I just replied to your PM with a more detailed answer, but what you provided me is the serial number for an Ohio built 1962 22' Safari Twin. As best I can tell that trailer was likely originally ordered by a dealer named "Northside", possibly located in Milwaukee, WI. That's all I got. Good Luck!

Wow. I did a google search on another topic and one of the results was a link to a post near the beginning of this thread. Looking at that I realized I have been trying to answer these questions since November 2005! Thirteen and a half years and counting! I didn't think it had been that long.

Back in 2005 I only had a few old Membership Directories, so my answers were very incomplete. Over the years I filled in my collection.

Back then I was just a "plain old club member". I didn't become the WBCCI Historian until 2015. The title did not bring any additional resources.

Back then I was a "working man" with limited free time. Now I am retired with limited free time. That hasn't changed much.

Joe,

Your work is just incredible! We bought our 1972 Airstream Tradewind in 2017 from a rancher in west Texas. The original service and owner's manuals and some receipts were still in the camper. The name on the early receipts was "Knight". The faded WBCCI number on the camper is 31094.

Any info on this number would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for all your time and hard work.

Hi Harry & Sheila,
WBCCI #31094 was first assigned in 1976, thus first apearing in the 1977 Membership Directory, so I cannot help with any information before 1976. Here is how #31094 has been assigned over the years:
  • 1977: Ray & Fran Knight, Charleston, SC, no caravans.
  • 1978-80: Unassigned.
  • 1981-2000+: Alvin E. & Annette Lee, Cantonment, FL, no caravans (I did not provide their last year in the club due to privacy concerns).
So we can be pretty sure that the Knights owned your 1972 Sovereign. Whether the Lees also owned it is much harder to determine. The unassigned years year in between suggest they were just randomly assigned an unused number, though I do not believe numbers above 30000 were often randomly reassigned. Cantonment. FL (near Pensacola) is quite a distance from Charleston, SC, but is is part way between there and Texas, where you found the Sovereign, so who really knows. If the numbers are really faded, that either suggests that only the Knights owned your Sovereign, or if the Lees also owned it, they may have upgraded to a different Airstream long before they dropped out of the club. But that's really nothing more than speculation. That's all I got. Enjoy your Sovereign!

That makes sense. The Knight name is on a lot of the 1970's paperwork we found. Our model is actually a Tradewind, so it was probably reassigned to the Sovereign. I'm fairly certain the owner in Texas had our Tradewind before 2000. Again, thanks for the work you do.

There is no Sovereign. Just a memory error as I wrote my reply. All my comments apply to your Tradewind.

Joe,
I can’t thank you enough for the hard work and long hours that I’m sure that you put into researching this information. The information on the Stuckey’s helped us to complete the history on our Safari. We know that the second owner of the trailer was Carl Allen who was also from the Detroit area and weren’t sure if he was a club member or not. He purchased the trailer in Michigan and brought it to Florida in 1976 on its last road trip until we rescued it. I only wish that we had more information on our Liner to be able to have a full history on it. Thanks again for researching and providing this information.

Safe Travels!!
