The number (20262) belonged to a WBCCI member, not the trailer. WBCCI typically does not give out member information, and they reassign numbers after a period of non-use. The number may be active now, but may or may not be the same person as owned the trailer you are interested in.

Hello everyone,

I will chime in here with another possible request.... we just purchased a 1962 Safari a super project trailer... (we've been there done that...) but the shell is great. She has some WBCCI numbers under a couple of layers of (gulp) paint on the roof. Just wondering if there is any information on the numbers, I know there might be a name in an old registry.... it is an Ohio made trailer and we think originally or early on was sold in New York state. Just thought it would be fun to know! So if anyone can assist we would be very appreciative!

Spring is finally coming... and we are anxious to hit the road! Hope everyone has safe travels this year!

Yikes.... I posted the question about WBCCI numbers above.... OMG I forgot to post the actual numbers.... So apologies! Must have been posting with only one cup of coffee... Here are the numbers on our Airstream:
11754

If anyone has information on these numbers we would appreciate it, curious!

Hi All,
I used to try to answer these questions within a reasonable time, but life has become too hectic lately and I see that I have not answered any of these requests in this AirForums thread for about a year, though I have answered some via email over the last year.

By my count, I see about 15 valid unanswered requests in the queue and I think it only fair to answer them in the order posted. Since I am currently home sick and can't work on any "outdoorsy" type projects at the moment I'll start by answering this first request in the queue:

Thank you
Specklez, WBCCI membership #2735 was first assigned in the early 1960's but those details do not matter. From 1972 thru 1997, #2735 was assigned to:

James & Sara Hudson, Naples, FL (1972), Columbus, NC (1997, James only). The Hudson's were credited with the following caravans:
89 - Mexico Fall 1972
N7 - WBCCI Post International Rally Caravan 1978
N9 - WBCCI Post International Rally Caravan 1980
N12 - WBCCI Post International Rally Caravan 1983

#2735 was unassigned in 1998 thru 2002. It was then assigned to a couple from Texas for a few years, but I am withholding those details because that is too recent to post online. I spot checked a few years into the 2010's and did not see the number reassigned, but it may have been for a year or two.

So what can we guess? Obviously the Hudsons joined WBCCI in 1971 (thus being listed in the 1972 Membership Directory) with an Airstream earlier than your 1974 Ambassador. They obviously took this earlier Airstream on the 1972 Mexico Caravan. At some point they may have upgraded to your 1974 Ambassador, possibly when new, or possibly years later as a used trailer. They may have taken it on some or all of their WBCCI caravans. Or maybe not. Possibly the couple from Texas owned your Ambassador. Or maybe not.

Given that this number has been assigned to club members in the FL/NC area and the TX area and you are from OR, I have no good guess who may have previously owned your 1974 Ambassador. Maybe paperwork in the trailer or dealer decals/badges on the trailer might indicate a previous history in FL, NC, or TX. That will be up to you to determine. Sorry that I could not provide a more solid educated guess. Enjoy your Ambassador!

I think this is enough work for tonight. Maybe I can get to another request tomorrow.

HI NoStew,
WBCCI number 22479 was first assigned in 1969, probably late 1969, which could be appropriate for an early built 1970 Overlander. Here is how #22479 has been assigned over the years according to WBCCI Membership Directories:
1970-92: Kenneth & Beatrice Dehaven, Orlando, FL, no caravans.
1993+: Unassigned, only spot checked a few directories, but unlikely to have been reassigned in the directories I did not check.

Thus we can be pretty sure the Dehaven's owned your 1970 Overlander. I would guess they bought it new and immediately joined WBCCI. I cannot say if they owned it thru 1992, or perhaps if they upgraded to a newer Airstream at some point during their time in the club.

That's all I got. Not idea when or how it made it's way to Alabama. Have fun with it. 1970 Airstreams are a nice transition year between the wooden cabinets of the 1960s and the tambour (roll up) door interiors of the 1970s.

Thanks, Steve
Hi Steve,
Here is how WBCCI #3594 has been assigned over the years according to WBCCI Membership Directories:
1960-73: Dr. Frederick & Anita Barr, Dayton, OH, no caravans.
1974-75: Unassigned.
1976-79: Marvin & Betty Hoke, Dayton, OH, no caravans.

1980-86: Unassigned.
1987-98: William & Gloria Hock, Independence, MO, no caravans.

1999-2000: Unassigned, did not check further as the numbers clearly look like they are not newer than the 1990s.

What can we guess? The Barr's obviously joined the club with an Airstream older than your 1968 Overlander, but they could have upgraded to your trailer during their time in the club. Or maybe not.

I might guess that the Barrs and Hokes might have owned the same Airstream as they had the same WBCCI number assigned only a couple of years apart and lived in the same city. That could be your Overlander, or maybe not.

Doubtful the Hocks owned the same Airstream as the Barrs and/or Hokes.

Overall, since you are in Connecticut, I might guess that it is slightly more likely that the Barrs and/or Hokes owned your 1968 Overlander rather than the Hocks, but mainly because Ohio is closer than Missouri. Perhaps paperwork you got with the trailer or a dealer decal/emblem on it might point to it previously having resided in Ohio or Missouri. That's all I got. Enjoy your Overlander!

Hi garciacag,
WBCCI #31913 was first assigned in 1979, thus first appearing in the 1980 Membership Directory, so I cannot help you with any history before 1980. Here is how #31913 has been assigned:
1980-84: Basil & Martha Moncrief, Corpus Christi, TX, no caravans.

1985+: Unassigned, but only spot checked a few directories.

Thus is seems almost a certainty that the Moncriefs owned your 1966 Safari in the early 1980s. That seems reasonable since they and you are both from Texas. Unfortunately, that is all I can tell you. Thanks for your patience waiting for an answer. Have fun with your Safari!

Hi Bubba,
Yes, lookups can be time consuming. #3960 was first assigned in 1960. Here is how that number has been assigned over the years:
1960-69: Harry & Norleen Ayles, Saugus, MA (1960-64), Hampton Falls, NH (1965-69), Caravan 26 - Mexico Winter 1961
1970-80: Willem & Margaret Kraan, Paramount, CA, (1980 Margaret only), no caravans.
1981-86: Unassigned.
1987-91: Byron R. & Haroldine L. Jaquot, Chula Vista, CA, no caravans.
1992-93: Unassigned.
1994-96: Jacques & Madeleine Beausoleil, Leval, Quebec, Canada, no caravans.
1997-98: Unassigned.
1999: Douglass & Rhonda Volz, Bouton, IA, no caravans.
2000: Unassigned, did not check further.

As you picked up your 1955 Flying Cloud in Michigan, one would think that this would help make an educated guess as to which of the above might be a prior owner. The trouble is that none of the assignees of #3960 had addresses near Michigan, thus we are left to look for clues in or on the trailer, such as paperwork you got with it or a dealer decal/embelm that might point to a prior location in/near MA, CA QE, or IA.

The biggest clue, though, might be that, from photos in your restoration thread (http://www.airforums.com/forums/f73/...no-154849.html) I know you have a California built 1955 Flying Cloud. This clearly makes the Kraans and/or Jacqouts as the most likely prior owners as all of the other assignee locations were more likely to have Airstreams from the Ohio plant, though there are no absolutes. A supporting clue is the amount of fading of the ghost numbers, which helps suggest how long ago the numbers were applied. Since your numbers are/were very faded, I will make my best educated guess that the Kraans owned your 1955 Flying Cloud in the 1970s, although if information in/on the trailer points to it having been in MA, then I will shift my guess to the Ayles.

I will keep following your restoration. I hope you get the Flying Cloud on the road soon!

I think I am done with number lookups for today.

Thanks again.
Hi Jeremy,
WBCCI #21104 was first assigned in 1968, which could be appropriate for an early built 1969 Airstream. Here is how that number has been assigned over the years:
1969-82: Royal C. & Ada Hayden, Red Wing, MN, caravan 95 - Eastern Canada Summer 1973.
1983+: Unassigned, but only spot checked a few directories after 1990.

Thus we are left to guess that most likely the Hayden's bought your 1969 Overlander, immediately joined the club, and probably took it on their 1973 caravan. That's all I got. Enjoy your Overlander! I really like the uniqueness of the 1969 models, though I've never owned one.

I never ask for payment. I just suggest that everyone who I do research for consider joining the Airstream club (WBCCI) if you have any curiosity. There are lots of great people and great activities in the club, though it may not be a fit for everyone.

Hi Fredrick,
A 3-digit number is pretty unsual. While in the early years these numbers could be assigned to any club member, since about 1970(ish) these low numbers have been reserved for special purposes as far as reassignment goes, but those that were assigned such numbers before 1970 could keep them as long as they remained in the club. #199 first appeared in the very first Membership Directory in 1955. Here is how that number has been assigned over the years:
1955-1969: Harry & Anna Grief, Estes Park, CO (1955), Phoenix, AZ (1969), caravan 5 - Mexico, West Coast Winter 1955.
1970: Unassigned.
1971-91: William A. & Rose Blake, Adelanto, CA (1971), Boron, CA (1991), caravans 66 - Western Canada Summer 1969 & 80- Old World Europe 1971.
1992+: Unassigned (reserved for special use).

The above now requires additional research for "the rest of the story", since the Blakes are credited with a caravan before they were assigned #199. Looking back to earlier directories, we can see that the Blakes were originally assigned #14752 from 1967 (possibly 1966) thru 1970. Thus some time in 1970 they must have requested to change their membership number to the then available #199. Club members occasionally do change membership numbers for a variety of reasons.

Based upon the above we can be pretty sure that either the Griefs or the Blakes owned your 1963 Tradewind (likely not both), but given that you are in Michigan and both couples lived several states away, it is hard for me to guess which it more likely the previous owner. The Griefs obviously originally had a much older Airstream, but they could have upgraded to a 1963 Tradewind when new or possibly later as a used trailer. On the other had, it is hard to hazard any guess about what Airstream (or Airstreams) the Blakes may have owned, but it would be exciting if there was some chance that the Blakes might have taken your Tradewind on the 1971 European Caravan, though that is not a certainty even if the Blakes owned it as they could have owned different Airstreams over the years.

Anyway, perhaps you can find some clues in or on the Tradewind that tie it to the Griefs or Blakes, or perhaps to a dealer in California, Colorado, or Arizona . . . or maybe even to participation on the 1971 European Caravan. A ghost outline of #14752 under the 199 would conclusively tie the trailer to the Blakes. Good luck looking for these types of clues. Enjoy your Tradewind!

I am signing off for tonight. This one took quite a bit to research and I still need to get my rest to shake this cold. Good night.

Hi drhuffman,
#14774 was first assigned 1n late 1965 before your 1969 Sovereign was built. Here is how it has been assigned according to WBCCI Membership Directories:
  • 1966-78: Dr. Walter P. & Viola Streitel, Laguna Hills, CA, caravans 54 - Trans Canada Summer 1967 & 63 - Yucatan February 1969.
  • 1979+: Unassigned, spot checked many, but not all directories up to 2000.
Thus we can guess that it is most likely that the Streitels owned your 1969 Sovereign. They would have joined the club with an earlier Airstream, but could have upgraded to the Sovereign when new in late 1968 or early 1969 or possibly years later as a used trailer. If they upgraded to it when new, it seems likely that they would have taken it on their Yucatan Peninsula caravan. That's all I got. Enjoy your Sovereign!

Hi Emily,
As I have noted for several other recent lookups, WBCCI #13907 was first assigned before your 1971 Sovereign was made, in this case in 1965, thus first appearing on the 1966 directory. Here is how #13907 has been assigned over the years:
  • 1966-75: Robert & Evelyn Strong, Muskegon, MI (1966), White Hall, MI (1975), no caravans.
  • 1976-77: Unassigned.
  • 1978-2006: Ernest K. & Janice M. Rotering, Grove City, OH, caravan 225 - Newfoundland Experience, 1995.
  • 2007+: Unassigned, only spoke checked a few.
So what can we guess? The Strong's obviously joined the club with an earlier Airstream, but could have upgraded to a 1971 Sovereign when new or later as a used trailer. No real clue as to what Airstream(s) the Roterings may have owned, but if they owned your 1971 Sovereign, they might have taken it on their 1995 Caravan to Newfoundland. Given the two unassigned years and distance between the Strongs and Roterings, I think it most likely that #13907 was just randomly reassigned, thus both likely did not own the same Airstream.

You are located about midway between Muskegon, MI and Grove City, OH, though slightly closer to Muskegon, so your location does not favor either the Strongs or Roterings as previous owners significantly. This means you will need to look for clue in or on the trailer than might point it to a previous owner location in Michigan or Ohio. Or maybe where you purchased the trailer might be close of where one of the previous assignees of #13907 lived. That's all I got. The rest of the investigation is up to you. Good Luck. Enjoy your Sovereign!

Hi Cheoah,
It is likely a good guess that #6249 is original to your 1962 Ambassdor, because that number was first assigned in 1962, thus first appearing in the 1963 WBCCI Membership Directory. Here is how #6249 had been assigned over the years:
  • 1963-78: John & Donna Martin, Green Bay, WI, no caravans.
  • 1979-81: Unassigned.
  • 1982-2002: M.A. & Helen Sisk, Roanoke, TX (1982), Bartonville, TX 2002, Helen only), caravan 195 - Yucatan Adventure 1991 and a couple of WBCCI Unit caravans.
  • 2003-04: Unassigned.
  • 2005: Reassigned, details withheld.
What can we guess? Given the unassigned years and distance in between the Martins and the Sisks it seems most likely they did not own the same Airstream. You are not particularly near either couple, so that is not a strong clue. The best clue is #6249 being first assigned the year your 1962 Ambassador was made. Thus my best guess is that the Martins owned your Ambassador. I have no way helping you determine how it could have made its way from Wisconsin to North Carolina. Have fun with your Ambassador!

Hi painterfam,
WBCCI #20058 was first assigned in 1967, thus first appearing in the 1968 Membership Directory, so I cannot provide any potential help between 1963 and 1967. Here is how #20058 has been assigned over the years:
  • 1968-81: Wilson C. & Ruth Moore, Colorado Springs, CO (1981), Cabool, MO, caravan 83 - Mexico Fall 1971.
  • 1982+: Unassigned, though only spot checked a few directories.
Thus it seems pretty clear that the Moores owned your 1963 Globetrotter. It is also possible that they took it on their 1971 Mexico Caravan, but we cannot be 100% sure as they could have owned different Airstreams over the years. That's all I got. Go make some memories of your own with your Globetrotter!

I think I am done for tonight as I have finally addressed all the requests made in 2018! Just a few from 2019 are now waiting in the queue.
