As a fairly new Airstream owner, my husband and I just visited a rally and after a very warm welcome and meeting alot of great people, we are looking forward to joining the WBCCI.

Our 76 Caravanner is ghosted (much to our dissatisfaction) with #2828 and wondering if we could get the same number if we join? Or at least learn more about the history?

Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately you will not be able to get 2828 as it is currently in use.

2828 was not used in 1976, but in 1978 it was assigned to Paul Schnarr from Westland MI. We can not tell if that was your trailer, as others may have also had that number over the years.

The seller told me it was her fathers and a one owner. Any Idea who it was sold to.

And the Camfields were last listed in the 1971 Directory, still in Sarasota, no caravans.

Jack & June Camfield #4191 were listed in the 1960 Directory living in Imperial Beach, California.

Perhaps they owned another Airstream previous to your 1961 !

That looks highly likely. The N.A.T.O. PO box likely indicates he was in the service. 1960 is 51 years ago, so they are likely not caravaning any more.

#4191 was first assigned in 1960 and being one of the higher numbers assigned that year (#4359 was the last), it would seem their number was likely assigned late enough in the year that they could have bought a brand new 1961 Airstream (model year changeover was probably somewhere between July and September), and then immediately joined the club. The 1960 Membership Directory was the last one published at the end of the year on the cover, or more precisely, it was copyrighted in early 1961.

Thus I would suggest that the Camfields bought your '61 Sovereign and then immediately joined the club - likely no previous Airstream, although I cannot prove it.

Hi everyone and thanks for this wonderful historic look at the WBCCI.
I have a 66 Safari that I'm working on and I'm curious about its history. It had 13693 on it at one time. There are pictures of this Safari on RJ's site. It is listed as "Safari2"
Thanks in advance!

It is not practically possible to definitely follow the trailer in the WBCCI records. You might start with the DMV in the state your father lived and try to track it that way. It is unlikely the trailer which now has 6354 is the one your father owned. The numbers are frequently reassigned. But: membership number 6354 was owned by Ray and Barbara Daoust from Scottdale, AZ in 2003. Currently that number is not in the book.

If you have more pictures, maybe one of them might have the trailer VIN that could be read. The VIN is stamped on a plate next to the door. The VIN would tell us what year and model trailer we are dealing with.

#6354 was first assigned in early 1962. In my 1966 WBCCI Membership Directory it was assigned to Gamewell and Pat Gantt of Houston Texas, no caravans. I didn't have the time to check later directories.

As for the trailer, the drip caps over the windows indicate it is 1962 or earlier - very appropriate for a WBCCI number that was assigned in 1962. It is tough to be sure, but I think the wheel well shape is the one used in 1959-61. The trailer is a single axle model, which means it is 26' or less in length (or 24' or less if a 1961+ model). It seems to have a single (not stacked) Jalousie window forward of the door and another "flat" window rearward of the door on the curb side. From the plumbing stack locations and wide tail lights, I will guess that it was made in the California factory, rather than the Ohio factory. Given all of these details I will suggest that this trailer is most likely a 1961 22' Safari Twin bed model or a 1961 24' Tradewind that was built in California. I say 1961, because such a trailer could have been bought new in late 1961 and not joined WBCCI until early 1962, although I cannot rule out it being a 1959 or 1960 model, in which case it could also be a 26' Overlander since they made 26' single axle models those years.

That the best I can do from this one photo.

It looks just like the 1959 Overlander single axle I have, before I removed the spare tire carrier. I too noticed the wheel well and single axle.

This is an interesting Airstream. The back bumper looks like a pre 1960 bumper, but your Grandfather might have had a complete new bumper made when he added the spare tire. If it was a 1959 (as indicated by the bumper) then the Airstream badge should be below the window rather than above.

I also note that the big red numbers are painted on. Another indication of pre 1960. After I blew up the picture it doubt that this trailer is longer than a 22'.

I see that your Grandfather was a Freemason.

The decal in the rear window of a fez which means he was most likely a Shriner.
