Red 'Wally Byam's Caravan' Front and Rear ID on Airstream Trailers

This is open to all that may have interest in revising a "vintage" plate. That appeared on the front and rear of earlier Airstreams.

I just passing on a copy of my plate.

The questions for those who get together to do a project like this are how many, the cost, and any copyrites that Airstream of the WBCCI might have.

Apparently there is some interest.

Count me in.

Are you thinking of designing a "new" vintage plate for this purpose?
....or resurrecting an old one? (does someone have a pic of the old one?)

It would depend on which 'plate' you are going to replicate. We do a lot of decal and label work for vintage car clubs used when doing restorations which do not require permission.

I am not now and do not see joining WBCCI in the foreseeable future, so I am not too interested in a WBCCI associated plate. I would, however, be very interested in a generic vintage Airstream plate. Also, if a plate which showed my year and model was available I would buy it in a minute.

I thought Vintage Trailer Supply used to offer those...but I don't see them on their site any longer. Hmmmm...

I would be interested in one or two though...

Marshall, If you are looking for these types of plates, Steve has them over at Vintage Trailer Supply. I also know for a fact that over the next several months he will be adding more restoration plates to his inventory.

When would that plate have been used? Was it just for an event or permanent? Looks pretty kewl to me - if nothing else I'd add it to the fridge wall where the prior owners put the little metal rally stickers to show what they had attended.

A "Wally Byam's Caravan" sticker is on my 1964 Bambi II. I guess it was on a caravan in the distant past. It is exactly like this plate PeeWee posted.

There were red ones and blue ones that were used for different caravans in the late '50s/early '60s. I'm not sure the significance of the color difference though. My trailer had a ghost of one of these and have often thought of making one in blue. Any sign shop that has a vinyl cutter can do it once you have the artwork, which I could make quite easily.

If any of you have one of these handy, what is the size of the red field?

Thanks.

Brad

PeeWee - is that one a sticker or a painted aluminum plaque? I think the ones VTS were stickers...

Since there was a ghost of one on my TradeWind, I imagined them to be stickers similar to the big red numbers although the ghosted image came off easier than the numbers did. I aslo had four round sticker ghosted shapes approximately 2 inches in diameter and believed them to be caravan stickers. Unfortunately they were unreadable. Being a '59, I imagine it could have been on a few caravans. Sure wish I knew the history.

For some reason I can't do a "Post Reply" or a "Quote".

The Wally Byam's Caravan plaque is aluminum, with a peel rear liner. The glue was engineered to stick to metal, and specifically the Airstream aluminum skin.

My signage is packed some where, waiting to be found.

Approximately 4.5 x 10.5 inches.

It is painted.

If there were blue signs, I have not seen them.

The round faded circles on Airstreams were primiraly unit signs. There were also International Rally decal "circles."

I had one of these front/rear on the 58 Flying Cloud in the driveway. The color had long-since faded entirely away. It was an adhesive-backed, metallicy, mylar-like field that I had a heck of a time getting off the aluminum. Strangely, the word "Caravan" is still ghosted into the metal. The letters must have oxidized away allowing for the bare aluminum to etch.
