Jim...You do not have to put your WBCCI numbers on your trailer...they WANT you to, but you don't have to. However, if you attend a large (regional or international) gathering you will have to display them prominently in some fashion because that's how they keep track of everyone... You can't just say, "We're in the shiny Airstream trailer down the way."

We do not have our numbers on our trailer...they call us "baldies"...

Jim,

My numbers are not and never will be on my trailer. Instead I took a piece of aluminum channel that would fit over the top of my center rock guard. To that I riveted a flat piece of aluminum. Numbers are mounted to that. I display it at rallies and functions-everybody is happy.

My '93 had never been registered, or at least never had the numbers put on, when I bought it about 2.5 years ago. Surprisingly, the very first rally (WBCCI) I went to a veteran Streamer recommended that I not put them on because of all the peeling/ fading issues they have. He recommended putting them on a piece of plexiglas, then prop them up somewhere, which I did. Then at a Region Rally, an even more veteran Streamer, the safety guru, chapped me for not having them displayed high enough for Emergency personnel to find. A POINT WELL TAKEN. Using some "S" hooks and some never -to- be- without aluminum coat hanger wire I now hang the plexiglas with the numbers on the gas bottle cover, under the lid. A compromise of sorts. At a rally you will blend right in. In an emergency you will want them to be able to find you quickly. Those red numbers just might save the day. Safe & happy travels . John

If our clearcoat was in good condition like yours is, I wouldn't put them on either. However, the original owners of our unit were in the club and had the numbers on, plus the clear coat is peeling anyway, so I didn't feel bad putting our numbers on. (Actually I think your aluminum isn't clear-coated the same way ours is, so it may be fine for those.)

Numbers

Our numbers are still in the original envelope that they came in, nicely tucked away in a kitchen drawer.

To each his own, but to me, a vintage Airstream doesn't look right without the numbers.

Even though mine has never had them, and likely never will, I can totally understand wanting them up there. The red numbers are as much about Airstream as the tube itself.

I bought the solar numbers kit at Lowes..its about a foot long had a small solar strip at the top..I put a piece of velcro tape on back of solar plate and a piece of velcro on my front window and just stick it on when Im at a ralley that it is needed..(the whole thing is about as thick as the top of a show box and hardly weighs anything) it works great !

I went over five years as a member without installing my numbers (bald).

The numbers they sent me consisted of three different fonts and two different colors of red. One of the numbers was over ½ an inch shorter than the rest. Who picked out the fonts and why two different shades of red?

There is a thread out here about theft, which got me thinking: if my Airstream had numbers, the thief either has to take more time to remove them before going down the road, or the cops will have a much easier time finding it …

So, I finally went and had numbers made to my liking and installed them.

On the other hand, if I’m out on the road, and someone has a membership book, they will know my address and know I’m not home! L

Now I'm thinking of having my own numbers made (using a different number and a different color - like green). That way I get the anti-theft benefit without exposing to the world that I'm not home ....

When our numbers fall off, I'll probably have some new ones made, too. Somewhat shorter ones. The current ones only barely fit into the space on the back of the rig.

back in '77 when I was 16 and my family got our first Airstream. Everyone had their numbers on their trailer. only noticed in the last what? 15years suddenly alot of people don't want them on and wonder why? I personally use a wet towel and iron to soften and simply peel off the numbers, others use a hairdryer, has no effect on the clearcoat. I guess I'm like the vintage people, airstream doesn't look right without them!
fyi, started with my family's 77, then a '96, an '04, and now back to a '77!

Sorry if I'm sounding kinda THICK here but if they are your WBCCI numbers on your trailer in any color they will still be in a membership book right?

You are in the membership book if you renew before November 1 of each year, regardless of color on the numbers or if they are on the Airstream.
