Membership Numbers

I was going through some of my old files when I was in Region 2 officer and ran across membership listing from 1966 to 1990. Thought it might be interesting for new members who have only joined in the past few years. In 1991 I was on the membership committee and we did not succeed in stemming the hemorrhaging.

Thanks

Thanks for posting these numbers. The 2008 IP's "State of the WBCCI" presentation showed membership numbers for 1988-2008, but I have not seen membership totals for earlier years.

Between this year's expulsion of Leo G, lawyer letters, DefendWally fiasco, forums closing, and dues increase, I have been expecting a big drop in membership from 2010 to 2011. It looks like that's what's happening.

Working to get the 88 trailer I recently purchased on the road. There is a picture of it at the 1987 (i think) internation with about 3400 units present. Last year we had what, 850 or so.
And most people in our region are quite old. We need to figure out how to induce some of the new "baby boomers" to WBCCI events and caravans. You prety much have to be retired to go on a long caravan, so we need to attract some of these young old people.

... or possibly look to retain the young families that become interested in the club and quit after the first year. That might help too.

I'm 61 and consider myself an old young person. In another year I will retire, but the idea of long carravans is out of the question. However 1 to 2 week ones are doable. Younger folks still working and or with children can only do short trips. To get newer people to stay in the club, take the carravan to where they would normally go on a trip to, this combines the AS experience with an itinerary oriented to younger folks. Hope I didn't hijack the thread! zz

I have been asked to post the 1988-2008 membership numbers from the 2008 "State of the WBCCI" presentation. Here they are.

(The first couple of years overlap with the data Hutch posted above, and they agree--which is always encouraging!)

1990 - 15,159
1991 - 14,239
1992 - 13,682
1993 - 13,005
1994 - 12,375
1995 - 11,651
1996 - 11,092
1997 - 10,583
1998 - 10,229
1999 - 9,755
2000 - 9,443
2001 - 9,074
2002 - 8,785
2003 - 8,593
2004 - 8,243
2005 - 8,258

Hutch309.2's numbers in graphical form are interesting. Note the dip that coincides with the early 80's recession.

Just one comment...and that's it. As a new AS owner (5 months), I am NOT interested in joining WBCCI (at this time).

Reasons?

1) Still working and really don't have free travel time to Rally, etc. a lot of family obligations. Maybe after I retire.

2) I got enough drama in my life with my work. DO NOT need the same crap in my relaxing time (law suits, foul tempers, etc.)

Get it straightened out and maybe the roles will go up.

The big picture

Here's a graph of the total membership from the data contained in this thread. Membership grew meteorically in the 60's, peaked in the 70's, then fell 20%--more than 5,000 members--in 1979-81.

I am sure the late 70's were hard years for the RV industry. It was the second or third wave of the 70's oil crisis and I remember even-odd gas rationing, gas stations out of gas for days at a time, and sometimes long lines. Traveling cross country would have been an adventure, all right, and not of a fun kind.

Then membership held fairly steady through the early 80's, and has been steadily declining ever since.

(The graph is printed landscape but it comes up displayed portrait in the version of Adobe Reader that I have. Tell the viewer to rotate it clockwise.)

Dropped out three years ago for that very reason. Heck, I just read another lengthy posting about how horrible Motor homes are.

You folks just don't get it do you!
