There was some talk of re-enacting the 59 Capetown to Cairo caravan. Those were simple times then. Nowadays international politics, revolutions, religious fundamentalism and terroism are factors that did not really exist. I heard the caravan is on hold for now. The caravan was not "funded" by Wally or Airstream but organized by the WBCCI club. Participants did pay their way. There is probably some truth that is was an event for the "elite" as particpants must have a good chunk of time and money, but I don't think this is the best adjective. Shorter caravans still happen all the time. In recent years WBCCI membership has been on the decline which is also a part of the equation. You may be interested in the book "Thank you Marco Polo" which is about the 63-64 world tour caravan. It is out of print but you can still get a copy from Amazon.com for an exhorbant price.
