We are MAL's. If there are enough of us (which I suspect there are), we should have our own Region and delegate at National. It seems like an easy fix to me.

Hi guys. There are definately enough of you.I'm certain there were over 500 as of the 2006 WBCCI directory.I was a MAL myself for several years until joining my current unit.
With over 500 members, the MAL's unit would be the largest in the club.

The beauty of the MAL unit would be NO overhead capital, no need for ceremonies, dress codes, nor an abundance of rules and provisions to stave off disharmony.

Much like an acredited internet home course, log in and you're good.

However, if we don't use addresses how's SkyMed going to find it's way?

It seems like there ought to be a "Let's Go Camping Forum right here. Anyone who wants to go camping can invite other Airstream company just by posting a notice with a location and directions. Bring your own food, cook your own food, get together around anybody's campfire as needed. Have fun, meet some new friends of like mind. No other organizing is necessary, is it?

We have this already in the form of "forum rallies". For more information, go to this section of the website: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f288/

Some guidelines for a forum rally are posted at: http://www.airforums.com/forum...ies-24683.html

Many a rally starts here in a thread where someone posts something like....I'm going to the Seafood and Wine Festival...wanna go? Or I want to check out this state park at ....wanna go? From there people add input and go camping.

But I can't say enough about joining a local unit. You don't have to join now, but look around, attend some rallies, and find a group that is like minded. Being a MAL means all of your $ goes directly to the national organization. When you join a local unit a portion of your dues goes to national. In the case of WDCU they keep a dollar and the rest goes to national. I can't remember how much national dues are. But by being associated with a local unit of your choice you would get a newsletter, emails for local happenings which sometimes are for "just camping". Its not for everyone, but don't be afraid to try a local unit on for size. We actually belong to two units.

well kids....

i've been FOR an official mal unit a lonnnnnnnnnng time.

it would be large.
it would be loose.
it would be fun.
it would be dangerous.
it would be a threat to other units and club stability.

even without voting rights, it would be a force.

problem is, without voting rights,
i don't think we can get the needed charter issues done...

bryan? what is your take?

it could be region 13, but i'd prefer something alphanumberic like

region ub313.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_UB313

now for those not following this issue,

pluto was recently about 2b 'unplaneted'...yes that's right we almost lost pluto!

but instead the star guys debating this issue decided to include a whole group of icey bodies way out there....like ub313. we are gonna get MORE planets!

so in honor of pluto and ub313 i like to see a mal unit named after either of them....or pluto could just be the unit mascot....

and i DO have the rbcci beret for official functions...

cheers
2air'

i am trying the member at large option and have yet to see the downside to it.i agree with you much and value the simplicity of it although ive met some good unit nembers and units .i travel alone some of the time but like to be rally ready and able for the vitage events also
My pro's list- I have met so many people who I love seeing over and over again at Rally's and I would not change that for anything.

Con list-too much time spent on "running things" rally's, region, electing this and that, changing names, don't change. Flags, lights, berets, blue jackets, white jackets, red jackets. Fly this flag, fly that flag, it's your trailer do what you want! WHO CARES!

I have decided that if I become a Member at Large I can still be a member but I can stay completely away from the constant "business" of the club. It's too much like being at work. I already have a job I want a little more relaxation and fun.

I will pick a place to go, let people know where I'm going and see if they want to come. You bring your friends, I'll bring my friends. Generators, kids, dogs, bring it on! Lights, flamingo's, the more the merrier. Sweat pants, hot pants, as long as your comfortable I'm comfortable.

What do I have to lose? Can anyone tell me the down side of this?
i havent yet seen the downside

I beg your pardon the majority of the fees a member pays goes directly to help their fellow members, and a MAL has all their dues going towards other members, the slight unit fees cover postage for the newsletters and membership materials and little else.

Don't care how things are run? Well maybe just realistically knowing ones limitations in assessment is a better way to put that. I am sure most had their opportunity to care and extend their hand and heart. I don't know where the line forms to give your suggestions and offer to impliment them. I think it may have been walled up. As is often said here, your experience may vary.

Don't do a "number' on us. We are told to join and change things. We are told to find a unit that is a good fit. We are told we can start a unit with 10 and name it for a region, well 2Air did that , I think. The sky's the limit. Look out world here we come!

Mal-practiced

Pardon the pun but I feel like I may be MAL-practiced at all this. I have been trying to listen and learn from all the wisdom and advice in these debates.

I have no permanent home, just lots of places where I have some friends and family and the occasional apartment and now my airstream (which is in mid-renovation). Once I am full timing this temporaryness will be even more permanant.

Not being clued in to all the details but I don't see why there can't be a specific group for MALs like my fellow bunnylover 2air has suggested and I also don't understand why you lose your vote by not declaring a set physical region. I would like to pay dues to perhaps help support other full timers and people who have made a point NOT to be localized. Maybe a full timer email or newsletter that is specific to people who are trying to support themselves on the road all year.

It is also important to me to not being cut off from the ability to have a say in any Wally discussions and decisions.

Hope I haven't beaten the dead horse too badly. Oh and sorry about the dead horse comment.

Ah... you've used the ol' Oreo/local unit scenerio on me. Hmmmm... very crafty Leo.

I am not for advocating quitting local units, they work well and represent their members' wishes. But the MALs are already in existence and I think it would be realistic to make provision for those who widen out to transcend one local area.
