Endangered species list?

After being contacted by a member asking me how many WBCCI Units have under 20 members and compiling the info for him,I thought it would be helpful to provide it for everyone.
I hope this info can help shed some light on the units which MAY be on the endangered species list.Of course all units are different and some of these units may be doing just fine.
I do not have all my data on spreadsheet. It is all done the old fashioned way.By hand. Keep in mind that these numbers are prone to human error(although I am confident of them being fairly accurate)and the fact the info is only as accurate as what is printed in the directory.Associate memberships are not included as I do not have access to this info.
Here are the units which have under 20 members as per the 2006 directory.

WBCCI Units with membership under 20
Members....Unit
19......#106-Texas Plains
17......#122-Canadian Atlantic
17......#129-Florida Sun Coast
16.......#43-Indiana Dunes
16.......#54-Midwest
16.......#85-Mohican Valley of Ohio
16......#123-Manitoba Unit
15.......#70-Berkshire NY
15.......#94-South Dakota
15......#149-Shenandoah Valley of Virginia
14.......#96-Memphis Tennesee
14......#171-North Iowa
13......#115-Appalachian WV
13......#145-North Dakota Peace Garden
13......#163-Northern Michigan
12.......#33-South Georgia
12.......#82-Mahoning Valley Ohio
10......#102-Texas Big country
9......#108-Utah
9......#132-Cadiz Highlands Ohio
As you can see, there are 20 units with membership under 20 members.

All the best,

None of my business

Its really none of my business since I am not a member and not likely to become one unless I move to the four corners region and that group gets approved. However, I am currious what the total number of units and total membership is.

This is really bad news for the bottom 2 units on the list. You are required to have at least 10 members to remain a unit. It is still hard for me to understand why Region 11 refused to grant a provisional charter to the 20 members of the Four Corners Unit.

Quote:

MERGER, CONSOLIDATION OR DISSOLUTION OF UNITS
Sec. 1
In the case of a unit that is unable to obtain officers as required by the unit Constitution and/or Bylaws,or is unable to retain or enlist ten (10) members in order to retain the unit charter as required by the international constitution, such unit may merge or consolidate with another unit or the unit may dissolve. In all cases units shall comply with the requirements as listed hereunder. (6/30/05)

Hmmmm, If I were as rotten as I am. I would see an opportunity for a group with ideas like the FCU to takeover an existing Unit......

If we build it, they will come.......
Once we become a unit, we would be more then happy to take in any members who's unit has lost it's charter. I would rather not think of it as a takeover, but more as a place to land. Utah members might want to join up with the Western Colorado Unit, it would be up to them. Let's hope that Utah can pick up a few more members and continue to be a unit of it's own.

I applied online to WBBCI and said I wanted to be in the Four Corners Unit (now I know what FCU stands for). But is it a Unit that's not a Unit?

We are 20 Airstream owners who want to become a new unit in the WBCCI. Our first attempt was to get a provisional charter from Region 11. We were turned down on this request. Since that rejection we have regrouped and have submitted to the IBT by way of the region president a request to become a charted unit. The IBT will make a determination on this request at their mid-winter meeting. What I and several other members of the FCU have done is join the WBCCI as a member of the WDCU. When the FCU gets charted we will move our membership to the new unit. The WDCU is another visionary type unit and they have been very eager to help us. If you search on FCU you will see some lively debate about this new unit. More information can also be found at the FCU website.

comments/suggestions

There are 20 units that have under 20 members. Are there any comments or suggestions of what the WBCCI can do to address this situation?Should they?
Or is there nothing that can be done leaving some of these units to fade away into the sunset like so many in the past?

been there done that

About five years ago our Unit was on the endangered list. When things got bad the only options were those quoted on this thread - merge or dissolve. When discussing our Units problems with our region President, this is all he had to offer. We decided we didn't like either of those options, regrouped and now have 25 members and counting.

Based on our experience I strongly believe WBCCI and the regions need to take a more proactive approach to first, recognizing when a Unit might be in trouble, then offering some solid support and a lot more options to assist units to turn things around.

As to recognizing the problem, there are several indicators that can provide clues to potential problems. Declining membership and declining participation of members are the most common. Also look at the activity calenders. Are there more lunches than rallies? Are there a lot of TBA's (to be arranged)? Look at the Unit officers. Are certain people being frequently recycled through various offices? Are some board positions vacant? Look at the newsletter. Is it getting shorter or using more filler? Are there more cancellations or changes in activities and rallies?

The solution IMO will require research, rethinking, a clarification of what a Unit is, the functions it serves and it's relation to it's members. It will require the development of some guidelines and some measurement standards. There will need to be some record keeping, some documentation and some reporting procedures put in place. It will also require the development of some new resources including evaluation and assessment tools and education and training from the top down and the bottom up. In other words work, not just window dressing. You have to understand the the problem before you can effectively initiate change and resolution.

We chose to take a chance at rebuilding our Unit primarily because geographically, merging with another Unit would require extended travel time to attend events. We knew there are a lot of great potential rally sites right here and as small as we were (at one point down to 3 active members), we enjoyed camping together and had already begun to develop our own style of rally. We also didn't want to loose our history and our identity. We are glad we chose to ignore advise and hung in there. It has paid off not only for our Unit, we have also contributed to the organization as a whole.

I really believe efforts made to keep units viable can be instrumental in membership growth in the organization overall. Units can act like a home base. Each unit has it's own personality and style. Although it is usually a group that is geographically close to where you live, you have the freedom to choose the Unit that best meets your needs and suits your interests. You can also be an affiliate of other units. A unit's members often become a close knit group with many shared experiences and a common history. As a WBCCI member, you can visit and participate in the rallies of other Units, you can take advantage of all the other Airstream adventures available including caravans, region rallies, and special events. It is nice to know though, that you have a home base that will welcome you anytime and to which you have a unique sense of connection.

I just read that the Denver Unit is looking into the feasibility of mearging the Wyoming Unit into their unit. This was stated in the newsleter for the Denver, CO Unit. Does this mean that Wyoming is close to being on the endangered list?

Hard to say.I show them as still having 26 members as per the 2006 WBCCI Directory. How active these members are is the question.
