Caravans.....

discovered this cool video of a Caravan to Guatamala....curious why there have not been any modern day caravans to central America, or south America for that matter. I'm sure there are more than a few Airstream owners that have the means and time to do it! I know I would if I could!

I'd do it in a heartbeat! I guess the problem would be the lack of about $12k+ to do it and 10 weeks vacation???!

Since you can't drive from Panama to Columbia I guess you'd need to boat it from CA to South America.

Cartels and corrupt governments. Can't imagine the security factor of 20+ Airstreams driving around any of these countries.

These countries have come a long way in recent years. With some simple common sense cautions I would feel fine in most places in most of them. We've been to Costa Rica and Nicaragua and would do so again. Border regions in Mexico deserve a bit of caution but I think most of the rest of Mexico would be spectacular to visit. Others have done it recently so WHY NOT.

Traveling to these countries is one thing, a caravan of AS trailers may be more than some of the locals could stand. Too much temptation.

Hi from AZ. . .the folks out here in AZ consider going to Rocky Point, Mexico akin to going to South Tucson. They do it all the time ! Of course the larger touristy places like Acapulco or Mazatlán are not as well thought of, but have you been to Nawlins lately ? Or Chicago ? No thanks. We're headed that way early Spring (Mexico), & looking forward to it. Regards, Craig

Many of the caravans years ago got some support from Airstream. I doubt if that support is available today.
WBCCI has some wonderful caravans, the Alaska caravan for instance, that are well attended. I think the reason we don't see the long international caravans like the had in the 50s and 60s is two fold. First, getting someone to set up and lead such an adventure, second, getting enough participants to commit, and stay committed to such a venture.
In 1993/1994, Bud Cooper, founder of the WBCCI Vintage Airstream Club, tried to set up another caravan to Belize. For whatever reason, it never happened.
