I am officially signed up to go on the Cape Town to Cairo trip in 2009. All my friends and family say I am nuts and by the sounds of many of the Forum members I just may be. But there are several individuals who have been putting the plans together for this trip for several years. The announcement for the trip has just gone out in the Blue Beret. I think that they will have the trip full in a very short time. National Geographic will be on the trip as well as many major sponsors will be involved as well.

Yes, many people out there think you are nuts, but I am sure that everything possible for your safety will be done. Most people think the safest place is the bed at home...
I would really love to join that trip of a lifetime, but it won´t be possible for me...
Which trailer will be taken for that trip??

I have signed up for the Capetown to Cairo trip in 2009. Sounds like most of the forum members feel the same way my friends and family feel, that I am crazy to go, that is is not safe to do. I don't deny there will be some risk, but the people who are putting the trip together are going to do everything they can to avoid risks. We have major sponsors such as Airstream and National Geographic will be with us. The countries we will be traveling through, we have diplomatic immunity. There is so much to learn about Africa and I have had fun getting a lot of current information from Go-Africa on the internet. I am interested to hear all the forum members comments. SC Air

I for one, and this is my opinion, the issue is not diplomatic immunity.

Sure the governments will be ok, it's individiuals or worse yet, groups of rogue individuals that I'd be worried about. Cruise ships on the cost of Africa attacked by folks, terrorists in Egypt....try explaining that you have diplomatic immunity to them.

In all seriousness though, it would be an interesting trip, of this I have no doubt and I commend those who wish to go and will enjoy their photos and stories when they return. Nothing that anyone says, less a military escort would make me feel safe(er) in those two countries in a caravan today.

SC Air - A comment like that in some of the countries the caravan will go through MAY and PROBABLY WILL get you KILLED. YOU do not have diplomatic immunity, you cannot get diplomatic immunity - you do not qualify for diplomatic immunity. Do you work for the Department of State, Defence Department, or any other such agency? US citizens that throw that term around are DANGEROUS and endanger those of us that do. Look at your passport - it explains your "rights" in a foreign land - if the passport cover is BLUE - it only means you are a US citizen (read target) and have all the rights in their lands that that stands for - NONE. If the cover is RED - you work for and hold SOME diplomatic rights, but only if there is SPACE on the embassy roster for you to hold the DIPLOMATIC place on their roster, if not - it is not worth the paper it's printed on and YOU SHOULD USE YOUR BLUE PASSPORT. Been there - done all of this - your best bet is to say you are from FRANCE.

Life is what you make of it. Frankly, we've all got to go sometime. None of us is going to make it out of this alive. If I've got to go, I think I'd rather die while on a great adventure than dying in bed some day wishing I'd have gone somewhere. First, we need to differentiate between foolhardiness and adventure. Foolhardiness is an individual striking out, unprepared into such a trip as this. Adventure on the other hand is exactly this caravan. A well prepared group who is equipped and have done their ground work.

I have had adventure, and continue to seek it. I have travelled out of the country, but not extensively. Last summer on a tour, we had four of our travelling party drown in Costa Rica. It was a tragedy, but I'd go again tomorrow.

There is never adventure without risk. When risk-taking is done, the journey is over. You can't avoid risk when embarking on an adventure, you can only minimize it to the best of your ability. Some people never undertake adventure that involves risk and are never willing to rely on themselves for their own safety. Some never undertake adventure at all, and rely on someone else to keep them safe. The reality is that people die at Disneyland where it's "safe", and they die in bed without undertaking risk at all.

I am envious and would love to go. This truly IS the adventure of a lifetime... the mere fact that it has only been accomplished ONCE and that feat is still spoken of in awed tones addresses what an adventure it was. The threats are real, but the outcomes are yet to be written. Take lots of photos. Blog it when you can. Post here often. I wish I were going, too. It IS truly the journey of a lifetime. May you have fair winds and following seas...

I would make sure before a bunch of money is spent, that both our goverment and their govts. are well aware of what is going on. Does anyone know if the local govts. have even been contacted and to what level? Also, understand, what could be good today, could be bad by 2009. I wish you luck.

Local Govts? How many countries do you think will change hands between now and 2009? This does sound like a trip of a lifetime. I personally have alot of this country that I would like to see first.
