Blue Beret Tip

Just got the Blue Beret and read the "tip" on one of the pages about making your campfire more colorful. Says to cram a piece of garden hose into a piece of copper tubing and set it on the coals until mulitcolor flame start coming out.

Maybe next month they'll suggest creative ways to fire up the old bong while sitting around the campfire. I'm already looking forward to the next rally.

Old news for us. Zamboni introduced us to this last June at the Midwest Forms rally. We're doing it again at Saturday night's campfire. He's got his hose and copper pipe with him.

Ok, what's the science behind this? Is the hose actually burning? Why do you need the hose? Inquiring minds want to know!

The copper or the hose alone will not do it.

It has something to go with the reaction of the gasses produced by the melting/burning hose reacting with the copper pipe.

We did an unscientific test at a rally with ones I made and the only way to make it work was to stuff the hose in the pipe. I have drilled additional holes in the pipe, but that was the way the one I was shown was made.

other fire tricks

Another trick I learned as a young man did not require a garden hose or copper pipe. Only needed a Bic lighter. I sent this tip into the Blue Beret.

Wait!!!

Hey 31. A word of caution!!! Wait to inhale till the flames die down. It doesn't burn the lungs as much.
Best,

It doesn't sound too healthy to me.

..and for those young at heart and don't have a bic lighter and really are amazed at "gacious anomolies" then here you are - just little 3 inch lenghts produced these beautiful fire dance! I could just imagine what a 2 inch dia pipe and rubber hose would look like.

Enjoy the show.

As far as I have been told - the copper stops the rubber hose from burning in a split second allowing certain gasses to form which normally would not at core temps. The gasses escape through the crimped ends into the flame to creat some pretty neat colours.

It is a GREAT TIP!!!! but we too found out before the tip arrived in the Blue Beret.

Mandolindave is right. I hate to be a spoilsport, but this is a really irresponsible practice.

Most garden hoses are made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Burning PVC releases dioxin, a highly toxic chemical and a known carcinogen. It can also form hydrochloric acid in your lungs should you inhale the gases. That pretty flame is a sign of illegal and dangerous practice -- for you, your guests around the campfire, and the environment.

For more info: http://www.state.me.us/dep/air/backburn.htm#5 or
http://www.healthybuilding.net/pvc/T...VCSummary.html

"Many people do not know the dangers of burning PVC. Burning of PVC produces hydrogen chloride gas in the smoke as well as dioxins and chlorinated furans, two of the most toxic cancer-causing substances known."

I wasn't aware that there was garden hose attached to it. Being the ususal Midwest Rally pyro and fire tender, I thought all we did was place the copper pipe in the fire.

I'd have to agree with the concern about burning garden hose.

Hmm, sounds like smoking pot to me. Illegal, not necessarily very healthy, packed with cancer causing carcinogens..........and any time there are more than a few people standing around a fire is typically a sign of illegal activity Hmmm, where is the next campfire at?

No kidding, here where I work, an employee failed a drug screen. His story, "I was standing too close to the campfire and must have accidently inhaled some second hand smoke" TRUE STORY!

By the way, who invited the cops?

Oh pooh is there anything on this earth we humans do that does not cause cancer!@@***

All our toys, that have engines, all the tires we dump into landfill all the oils and gasses we burn at home all have exhaust....

Everything we make to eat these days...even the fabric we wear...THAT's it we may as well pack it in!

(Rluhr - - We figured the same response re the rubber hose! - thus we just did a small fire with two little 2 in 1/2 inch pipes ...peace officer.... )

But is sure is PRETTY! - Like fireworks (hmm I wonder if they are banned yet)

You know. If you stay away from everything that causes or might cause cancer or other illness, and only eat organic food, and exercise every day. Then some day you will die anyway. True Story. Sometimes I think it's just a question of how long you'll be in the nursing home from being so healthy.

R's ref is about "Household burn barrels, woodstoves and on-site incinerators produce low temperature fires. They receive very little oxygen and produce a lot of smoke. Under these conditions a great many toxic substances are produced" In Connecticut burn barrels are illegal for anything and is burning trash in most states. So make sure your Rally fire is big and hot.
