For whatever reason, the black numbers were far more difficult to remove than the red numbers. If I remember what the original owners of my coach told me years ago (they were friends of my family and this would have been about 1970), WBCCI numbers were painted on the coach by the owners or sign painters - - one of my uncles was a sign painter and had painted the numbers on their '57 coach just a few years before they traded it on the '64 Overlander.

My father joined the WBCCI in the early 70's. We had red numbers on three different Airstreams.
Have been using red for some time now....

high-quality numbers

Did anyone have vinyl numbers of high quality made on a spaced sheet? Where did you have it done and would they do it for me by mail? If you had a good experience let us know. Tom

I had my white numbers made at a local sign shop where I winter in Dade City Florida. They have been on the windows for three years without any sign of deteroiation.
Any sign shop in your area should be able to make what you want.
Even the best red is unstable, so they will fade after a few years in the sun. I like the white numbers on the dark windows. No damage to the clear coat. Readable from a much longer distance than the red. Longer life. Some static from old time WBCCI.
Pay your money and take your choice.

Big Red Number tradition

We just signed up for the WBCCI membership and also joined our local Sierra Nevada Unit.

After much research on the Big Red Numbers, and great information found on this forum, I called the WBCCI hq and asked if the original numbers, that are faintly showing on the front and back of 'Buttercup,' were available. And they were! #17330

We are now anxiously awaiting their arrival. We'll have 2 sets made at our local sign shop -- one for now, before we polish and one for later, after we polish.

The numbers represent tradition for me. I think they are beautiful. They are like a name badge at a convention or a personalized license plate. A gentle greeting that says "hello." They give the impression, like a blast from the past, of friendliness and a neighborly environment. To us, that's what the WBCCI and having an Airstream is all about. We can be a part of something with tradition and somehow continue on the heritage of it all.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to begin travelling in the tradition until we bring Buttercup home and get her road worthy. Hopefully by June we'll be able to attend our first local rally. Then from there, who knows...

Just wanted you to know that you will be welcome at any WBCCI rally even if "Buttercup" isn't with you.

Many thanks...

Tarheel,

Many thanks for your hospitality.

We are truly looking forward to joining in - even without Buttercup! After reviewing the calendar we're going to try to make their next luncheon and their next rally, even if Buttercup isn't ready.

We are hoping to bring Buttercup home in the next couple of weeks, after some bearing repacking! Then the fun will begin.

We just received our numbers! We were able to resurrect the original numbers #17330. How exciting!

Special Numbers For Us!

Thanks to this thread, I realized that we could pick our "red numbers" if they weren't already taken. So, with my parents '06 directory, our search began. We finally came up with a biggie-"25678"-special to us because it's our birth months-one for each one of us! Even though this one is a big number, it actually means something to us- ! And Kathy at WCBBI was so great-told me if we changed our minds, call her back by Monday-lol!

Congrats on your choice. It's great to have a special meaning to the number you've chosen .Seeing the higher numbers have always reminded me of the rich history of the club.Enjoy

While my numbers aren't on the trailer, we asked for and got 5024 which happens to be the street address number of the home I grew up in. Someday I'll make my lexan sign and will display them when parked.

Question red numbers

I have an Airstream from the 70's with the red number, 976, and the WBCC emblem..where would the directories be and how could I access the history and information for this number?

3 digit numbers designate WBCCI officers. 976 is not currently assigned according to the 2008 WBCCE membership directory. In fact the highest 3 digit number listed is 306. I would contact Jodi at WBCCI directly. Maybe she has the information you are looking for.

Clarification

Just to clarify this post, here is some more info on 3 digit numbers. This is normally the rule of thumb but of course there could be exceptions.
100 series numbers are usually reserved for Int'l and Past Int'l Presidents.
200-300 series numbers are usually assigned to Region Presidents and those holding some sort of position in the club.
400-999 series numbers are rarely ever given out anymore and are usually long time members or decendents of those members who wanted to keep the number.
Again,there are exceptions.

Also,I should clarify that there was a misprint in the 2008 WBCCI Directory.Starting in the third column of Page 246 there was a '1' mistakingly put in front of many of the 3 digit numbers starting with #307 Ulrich. The directory shows #1307 instead. This continues right up to #909 Berg which is shown as #1909.
The next number after Berg in the directory is #1001 Sasuta. This is where the directory is listing the numbers correctly again.

I now return you to your regular scheduled programming.

You could get a four or six thousand number providing it is not already in use.If it is not in use it has to be inactive for two years to the best of my knowledge. There is a small surcharge to request a specific number.

Is that new? I don't think I paid extra when I joined about three years ago and requested a specific number.

Although with a number in the 13,000 area, they were probably glad to have someone want a number that large...

For me either when I requested one in 2001. I've never heard of an additional charge for a specific number. What's next?
