Thanks PeeWee

The brochure is in my collection now. Here's my ATW Airstream. It is a 62 Overlander with Wally # 5289. It was the Yeagers on the Around the World trip.

Excellent, another Around the World Caravan trailer. Yours should meet up with Lumatic's again one day. Oh, the stories they could tell around a campfire. I would love that.

Nifty - according to this, I live just 2 blocks away from where Roy and Evelyn Landis lived when they went on the trip. An interview with them might make a great Airstream Life article.

This is great stuff. I wonder how many of the participants are still alive and how many of the trailers are still around. I think Lumatic's is the third trailer that I have heard of that is still around.

Paul ~

With jbond's and Lumatic's trailers, who has the third one? BTW - you still have your '62 Overlander?

Route Card, and picture taken at Jerash, Jordan. I also have a picture of the 1960 African Caravan parked at Jerash.

Pee Wee,
Thanks for sharing the list. I will point out that to my knowledge there are a couple of "errors" in it, however.

1. The McGregor Smith Jr. family is listed in trailer #73, yet they actually participated in trailer #8511. You can see number 8511 in published photo's from the caravan, on the dock/ship in India and in other photo's I believe. #8511 is the Smith Family # in later WBCCI Membership Directories.

2. Also, if you count the number of listed participants in this document it comes to 103, yet the accepted number of participants is 104 for that Around the World Caravan. I beleive that David Sutcliffe may have accompanied Val and Mary Sutcliffe, but is not listed. I do not know if David was a son or grandson.

I will also note that some published photo's and I think the video too, show trailers with yet other numbers from the European part of the caravan. It has been noted that another group met up with the Around the World Caravan in Europe, but I have seen no published names or numbers of those "semi-participants".

Still your document is a great piece of history. Thanks for sharing it.

Hey Brad,

We sold the Overlander to a family in Colorado Springs. We've got the Cruiser now - it's nearing completion. (BTW - that light fixture crumbled when I took it off to send to you).

The third trailer was pictured on the forum here some years ago. I'll have to dig to find the picture but I think someone in Kentucky had it. They only posted a couple of times. It was a single axle trailer and the inside of the center door was still painted with the countries visited and I think it had some of the original travel decals on the outside.

Paul.

Herb, have you done anything with the trailer? I talked to you about it at the last Colorado Springs VAC rally and you had said it needed a lot of TLC.

Paul.

To answer several questions posed above, here are the trailers that I know still survive from the Around the World Caravan:

#5289 - 1962 Overlander - Herb's trailer currently in Florida
#6472 - 1962 Ambassador - Lumatic's Trailer
#7667 - 1963 Overlander - Was for sale on eBay in 2006 along with the original Ford 4x4 pickups that pulled it, was in Monrovia, CA at the time, current whereabouts unknown
#8671 - 1963 Safari - This is the "Kentucky" trailer that was refered to, photo's of it are in the photo archive from a show in Kentucky, but it resided in Indiana it's entire life until late last year when a guy for Ohio bought it and flipped it on eBay, it is now in California, being turned into a mobile honey beee observatory. See the Spring 2008 VAC Vintage Advantage for a detailed story about this trailer.

I don't have time to look them up at the moment, but there are several threads on the forums about some of these trailers.

Here are the trailers that I know were detstroyed and no longer exist:
#120 - Burned to the ground in a gas station fire in India
#4032 - Totaled in an accident in India
#5232 - Totaled in an accident in Kansas after the the caravan ended

What is this I hear about 62 Overlander possibly having owned another surviving trailer from the caravan. If so, I'd like to add it to my growing database of survivors.

And let me note that I have heard rumors of other survivor's, but the leads dried up and cannot be proven. Please provide inforamtion if you know of any other survivors. Thanks.

= = = =

Changing subjects, there is one person surviving from the Around the World Caravan that is still a WBCCI member - #5232 Marjorie Nolan. I believe that several children/grandchildren still survive, but none to my knowledge are current WBCCI members.

The directory was published before the Caravan left on the Cleveland. In Thank you Marco Polo, it states there were 105 people on the Caravan.

David Sutcliffe, and his parents traveled with us on the African Caravan.

8511 is interesting, it shows it issued to Smith in the numeric section of the 1964 directory, but I couldn't find an alpha listing until the 1966 directory.

Unlike the African Caravan there was no planned European Caravan, other than those on the Around-the-World Caravan. It is possible that a few Caravanners joined them in route in Europe. I don't have any info regarding that notion.
