I suppose that you all have heard the news. The four corners is off by over two miles.

This is tragic. The base, the terra firma, the very fundament of the Four Corners Unit has been called into question by a bunch of lowly surveyors.

I'm heartsick.

Lynn

PS: I think we should keep this a secret, for the IBT will surely not be happy.

All those people with pictures of them in all four states have to go back now and take new pictures.

A ploy by the tourism departments of the four states in question remains to be seen.

Good news/Bad news

Well don't take it too hard - although it's probably going to dampen the tourist business - but new jobs will be created to erect the new four corners monument site! Our government at work.

I suppose we should call ourselves the Almost Four Corners Unit, Close to the Four Corners Unit, Right Next to the Four Corners Unit, Unit of the What Used to be the Four Corners or the Unit Formerly Known as the Four Corners Unit. What are we to do? Wonder what else is off from those surveyors? Suppose the Grand Canyon is safe?

In the early 1970s we circled the 4C monument with our motorcycles. Going around a circles through four states in a few seconds. Didn't cost anything and it was no big deal, even though we rode all the way from the East Coast.
In the late 1990s, with my wife and kids, they wanted to charge us something to get in or to see it. No thanks.
Now with my Airstream, I'm interested in the geography and the atmosphere. Such topographical things or 'manmade' cartographical lines aren't worth going out of my way any more. But with GPS, why did it take so long to find the error and what other borders lines are wrong?

JStanley,

I know that the northeast corner of California is wrong and as a result the borderline south to Lake Tahoe. I think some of the casinos on the Norht Shore are actually in California.

California and Oregon

Hi, Huell Howser made a trip to find the North-West corner of California and it was something like 100 yards into the Oregon side of the border.

It will probably come as a complete surprise to you but whatever "monument" that you are referring to at Four Corners has NOTHING to do with either the US or any state government.

That is Indian land and the Indians are the ones who put up what is there in order to get some money from the descendants of the people who worked very hard at implementing the US government program of Indian genocide.

Hi, that's true and we will be living on an island. So far the process has been very slow; I think we are only moving about 1/2" per year.

Just think, in another 100,000 years, everyone East of the San Andreas fault will have ocean front property. I'm going to check the real estate ads now. I just need to know if they are going to move the fault too?

Californians aren't aware they fell into the ocean.

That part of the West Coast is now know as the "Sea of Debt."

That would be the Free State of Jefferson.

If you are not familiar with this, Google it.

Hi, that might be true, but we are not the "car theft capital of the world". [Phoenix]

Car Thefts 2008, and Phoenix Status April 15, 2009

In 2008 6 of the 10 cities ranked as "Worst Cities for Car Thefts" were in the state of California.

As of April 15, 2009, Phoenix, AZ has dropped off the top 10 listing year-to-date.

Based on population, not city name?

Hi, Play on words. "Based on population" [per 100,000 people] I still think Phoenix is the grand prize winner.

2008 Modesto, Ca. 4,200 car thefts.

2008 Phoenix, Az. 26,000 car thefts.
