It's that time of year again.Every year since 1996 I have gone through the annual WBCCI Membership Directory and tracked which unit each member in the directory has paid their dues to.These totals are for the primary unit and does not include associate memberships.
It is important to keep in mind that my totals are only as accurate as the information printed in the directory.
There is always cases where renewals are received late either by accident or on purpose as has been pointed out in previous years by a few on the forums.There are also other possibilities including printing errors and over the years this has happened several times.
I have over the years refined my tabulations so that each membership is checked at least twice to reduce errors.Human error is always a possibility but I feel very confident that these numbers are fairly accurate.
As this thread runs its course,I will post some of the results I found.
First the big number

2006 WBCCI Directory total--6919 Members

2007 WBCCI Directory total--6549 Members

2008 WBCCI Directory total--6406 Members

2009 WBCCI Directory total--6091 Members

The official total as per home office is 6112.Current membership as of last week was 6278 members.

There were 6 more units lost since the last directory was printed.Some folded and some merged with other units.They are listed below along with the membership totals for these units in the 2008 Directory.

Unit#42-Fort Wayne Indiana Unit (25 members)

Unit#43-Indiana Dunes Unit-14 members

Unit#54-Midwest Unit-15 members

Unit#107-Top-O-Texas Unit-18 members

Unit#159-Western Oregon Unit-27 members

Unit#160-Central Florida Unit-26 members

As I mentioned in my previous post sometimes the info in the directory is not 100%.There are still 12 members listed in the directory as Unit#159 members and 1 who used to belong to Unit#107,(107)would be the normal way it is shown and is now listed only as ().I'm sure that in next years directory these members will be listed with the new unit they have joined.

Members at large still account for the largest unit? in the club even with the significant drop in members of this group over the last year.

2008 MAL's -548 members
2009 MAL's -466 members

Most of the decline is attributed to these members leaving the club.Although I didn't track the total amount of MAL's who switched to a unit,there were many more this year than in previous years.

The largest unit continues to be the Washington Unit #112.It even got a little larger this year.

how many WBCCI members were lost due to death, year by year?

I'm sorry but that number is not available to me from the info in the directories.Each month in clubs official publication(The Blue Beret) there is a listing of those members who have passed away.The list in recent years has been much smaller than it used to be.Of course the total membership has been declining each year also so I guess that can be expected.
Home office may have that number for you.

Being able to share what I find out is thanks enough.Before I started doing this I wondered what the different unit totals were but found information hard to come by.
If you find the answer to your question I would be interested in hearing the result.

Hey Michelle,it was great to finally meet you last summer in PEI.I am showing a gain for the New England Unit last year.

Some units gained some members as a result of either merging with other units or gaining members when another unit in their geographic area folded.Since I have not heard anything official,just looking at the numbers it looks like the units below benefited.

It looks like 2008 was a great year for the Four Corners Unit of New Mexico (FCU or 4CU) in only their second year of operation.It CAN be done.

Hi Tim,

There were at least 38 units that showed a membership gain last year.This is a very positive sign to me.I realize that the info I am using may not be 100% accurate but in doing this for 13 years I have found it (under normal circumstances)to be VERY CLOSE.
No need for the non-believers in WBCCI to bash this thread.There is far too much of it on these forums.My data is not meant to provide ammo for them either.It is only meant as a means to provide info and to use it in a POSITIVE manner.
The New England Unit(NEU) numbers were answered in a previous post(#10)I believe.I have met many of the members and know they have a strong unit.
The Wisconsin Unit was also one of the gainers.The 2009 number was 68 members compared to 65 members in 2008.
The WDCU Unit numbers I have are not accurate as there were a number of renewals that did not make it in time to be included in the directory.I have attempted to get a more accurate number and it was being looked into.

The 2008/2009 numbers are out. In them, it shows WDCU lost 44 members. As unit President, I have the list and I can verify that it's not accurate. I'm researching the "why" and "how" this happened (our members that I know renewed but did not make it into the Directory), but I can easily say that we did not lose that many. Many on the list are long time WDCU members, former WDCU Presidents, who are still a part of the WDCU and most likely, always will be!

But, you will see the WDCU members drop, but for good cause. Before the FCU was approved, many current FCU members joined the WDCU to have a vote - and now that FCU is alive and growing, the WDCU numbers appear the opposite - but that was an expected drop in numbers. This is my hypothesis but I have to prove it.

I'm providing my list of 44 non renewers to the FCU President so that we can validate the numbers... Numbers or data taken out of context can do harm - as my degree in Operations Research has proved - so I'm posting this to keep these numbers in context with possible reasons so that people don't use the data in the wrong way.

The WDCU is alive and well!

Would it be possible for U to get me the stats for Region 4 Cincinnati Unit. I have a curiosity about this unit. Seeing its in the backyard of the National Office. Appreciate seeing the stats U have posted. Its a shame the head-honchos cant see the handwriting on the wall and lower dues and drop Rally fees and put on a big push to gain members. Looks like by the numbers WBCCI is slowly BLEEDING TO DEATH . I really hate to see that happen given the history of the club.

Just thought I would let you know that we now stand at 191 members! We only had 14 members not renew this year for a number of reasons (death, sold their Airstreams and bought a SOB (we call them traitors!), etc.)

Thanks for all the hard work - I wonder why Jackson Center doesn't provide this information in the Blue Beret - probably too embarassed!

NEU 064- Region 1 has 129 paid member as of to date. Not 110 as quoted. Our officers and all members works very very hard to retain and attract new members. It has been a team effort for our on going success.
