Question purchase now? 02 as 33k

just saw a 2002 as with dinette. doesn't look that different than the 2003 i have seen on web etc. (maybe the cabinets?)...

i am wondering if anyone would like to give me any last minute advice before i call the dealer and tell them to put the paperwork together.

i have done much research and figure if i get the airstream i will have little regrets. thanks for your 2 cents.

Think about this....

Think of HOW MANY vintage Airstreams you could buy for $33K! I know some don't like the hassle, or have the time, or a place to work on such a beast. Check out http://www.rvtraderonline.com if you havn't already. Mostly new units are listed, but this will give you an idea of what prices are around the country.

Go to NADA Guides and find the value of the particular model 2002 Airstream you're looking at. There are lots of different models with dinettes with a wide range of prices. Don't click on any NADA options that are included with the trailer, such as air conditioning, furnance, etc. Only click on options listed as such on the Airstream factory invoice. I wouldn't pay the dealer more than the average used retail price even for a new one.

I just purchased a new 2003 25' six sleeper for $30,200. I pick it up on Monday 12/23. I'll let you know how delivery goes before I recommend the dealer.

Unfortunately I do not have the time to fix up an old one either. New Airstreams are expensive compared to new cheap trailers, but they are reasonable compared to new motorhomes, cars or trucks.

My Dad had an Airstream for 25 years, I had a stick-box (class C motorhome) for a few years. The price difference between Airstream and trailer-trash is forgotten quickly, while shoddy quality is forever! IMHO - buy the best - Airstream.

1st, thank you.

2nd, i have figured out that a new unit will depreciate and i will owe more than worth as soon as i pull it off the lot.

3rd, the 22ft is too much trailer for my tacoma 4wd 6cyl. i am now looking at vintage 16 footers for a reasonable price and then sink 10k into it.

4th, i used to do van conversions and can see the limitles potential of restoring a vintage unit.

5th, i promised i wouldn't take on another rebuild project and buy new from now on, oh well!!

well, what do you think? if you read this and have a minute, please, point me to some good url's, some pix of your restore, or a good catalog or website to start pipe-dreaming with.

as i've been telling people.... if i do get an airstream people are going to be waving and stuff as go down thie road. and your responses are proving this out.

thanks, so much to all!

if you have money, buy a couple of year old one and save $5-$10,000 depreciation from a new one

Look for a nice fairly new Bambi

If you buy an old one (1960s-70s) you may have to do alot of work before you can have fun with it.

Restoration is a nice idea, but its WORK
Buying SMART will get you a newer trailer at a good price

the dealer called me back today. i told him to look for a 2002 19ft or early 2002 16ft bambi with the couch option. it may be worth my while to drive across state over the weekend and take a look at this 16ft 1958 that appears to be in great shape from the pictures. still, i don't know enough (technically), yet, what to be looking for while veiwing it... here's hoping for a reasonably priced 2002 popping up soon! thanks.
