He're a heads-up for other CCD owners: Watch your heads!! Our overhead storage cabinet collapsed while moving at 20 mph in the tame, but crowded, streets of Saranac Lake, NY. No prior indications of rivet failure, metal fatigue, or any abrupt, load-shifting stops. The riveted aluminum support strip at the top of the cabinet remained secured, but the composite wood trim it supported detached and pull the two -- yes, just two -- screws securing the cabinet bottom to the side panels above the side windows out completely. The contents were dumped all over the inside of the unit, including a broken oil container and dry goods (cereal, spices, 6 or so canned food containers, and two bottles of spirits) -- in sum, nothing we haven't carried in the cabinet before in our 13 years of travel in it. Our Airstream "owner's manual" doesn't specify load limits in these cabinets, so it's hard to know if a weight threshold was violated. I hardly think so.
I tried 4 times to send an account of this incident to
service@airstream.com on their in-house platform, but each one was rejected as "undeliverable," even though identical email easily traveled from my laptop to my wife's smart-phone. Perhaps the file is full!
Anyone else have this problem in the past?
