LED Replacement for Halogen Cabin Lights

Has anyone come up with a LED replacement for the halogen cabin lights on the CCD's?

The halogens pull too much power.

I'm thinking there is, or soon will be, a g4 based led to insert into the socket the 10 watt halogen now occupies.....or there might be a complete lamp assembly to insert in the cabin cutouts.

Any help would be appreciated.

LED Replacement for Halogen Cabin Lights

What do you think about this product?

Certainly looks powerful enough, do you think it will fit in the lamps?

I did buy some of these lights, and I also replaced the factory supplied 10 watt bulbs with 5 watt ones. The light of the LEDs I'd describe as slightly less than a 5 watter which is less that a 10 watter. If I put the light output of a 10 watt halogen at a 10, I'd put the light output of a 5 watt halogen at a 7 and an LED assembly at a 5. Gerry

You can pretty typically get halogen bulb replacements (G4 bases) with LED arrays now on e-bay for about $15 (less in quantity) on e-bay.

eBay Motors: G4 White 14-LED Light Bulb Sailboat Boat Halogen Cars (item 190181704065 end time Feb-05-08 08:53:55 PST)

Has anybody tried some of these units from this vendor?
Thanks,
Gerry

I tried the LED replacements, and here is what I found:
Pro: cool running, low energy consumption, rugged for travel, small size.
Con: light color is terrible. Light output lower than the halogens. OK perhaps for accent lighting inside the CCD roof lockers, but unpleasant light color for task lighting. I took them out and re-installed the 10W halogen lamps. The aura returned..
Keep in mind that in the old days the 4 bulbs in a 70's trailer's roof fixture were up to 84 watts. 4 of the halogen floods make much better light at only 40 watts. Replacing those 4 halogen lamps with 5W units reduces this to 20 watts. Hardly a large draw on a healthy batttery, even during a few days of boondocking. That's about .2A.
I'd be more worried about the current draw of a furnace, water pump or 12V powered fan. Lamps are only needed for alimited time each day, anyways.

Uwe, I don't understand your last paragraph. I'm not trying to sharpshoot you, but if you have a 12 volt battery, 20 Watts would be .6 Amperes, wouldn't it?
regards

Correction

In my last post, I left off a "1". Read 1.67 A vice .6A. Sorry

Hey Gang,

Imtra Marine makes/sells a direct replacement LED light that will fit perfectly into the G-4 halogen fixtures of the newer Airstreams. I have replaced ALL of my halogens with these. They have a slightly lower visual output, but I find the light level from these most acceptable.

Be sure to order the 'warm white' style, as this quality of light is virtually identical to the 10w halogen bulbs found in the AS. The 'cool white' is very blue and harsh!!

That URL doesn't work for me. Looks like the parent forum was renamed/relocated. This one does:

You're right, of course. I meant to write 2A, instead of .2A, while 1.67 is much closer to the formula.

I have yet to find any definitive lumens output of any of these LED arrays compared to classic halogen of 5 or 10 watts. Has anybody got a definitive lumen output of the LEDs?

Also, is the comparison of lumens between light sources linear or exponential? Example, is a 10 lumen light source twice as bright as a 5 lumen source or is it 4 times as bright?

Thanks, Gerry

I have replaced the dinig area lights with these
G4 LED lamp Specifications
Minor decrease in intensity, didn't have warm white when I got them but I like the power savings. I have the 6 bulb model, no problem with polarity in the socket

G4 base led replacement light bulbs 21 led

I found a site in China. The prices were very low compared to some other sites. Does anyone has an opinion on these? http://www.ledlightbulb.net/store/in...=2_49&products

They are a manufacture and will ship.

I see these folks have added warm white and higher lumen (up to 111) bulbs than what were available when I got them.

Super Bright LEDs - MR16 and MR11 LED Bulbs

Be sure to scroll down the page to the G4 bulbs. I have had great experiences with their availability and delivery.

2014 update to this older thread on LED upgrades in vehicles originally fitted with halogens -

Selection and price both continue to evolve significantly. We replaced our halogens with a non-Airstream LED option because the intensity of the aftermarket product appeared to be better than what we had seen while touring new Airstream Interstates on dealer lots. Not only was there no decrease in intensity (a plague among first generation LEDs), the new LED pucks were brighter than the halogens. And yes, we used "warm white" as folks recommended here. Some of the blue-ish LEDs are really harsh.

The only complexity in using the generic product in the retrofit was that the pins needed a slight trim to fit the Airstream ceiling sockets. I have described that process with a bunch of photographs here (non-commercial, non-monetized blog link):
