22' International CCD

All brilliant ones. I have read some of the old threads about the 2002 22' International. What is this about problems with the frame? What should I look for in that respect?
Thanx,

They can break. The outriggers can bend or sag, the frame can sag at the rear, the frame can crack. Most of these issues are with the rear kitchen models.

Is it safe to assume that this frame problem was corrected in latter year 22' trailers?

Is the kitchen in the rear part of the trailer?

We would have the same question, we have a 2005 - 22' Safari, kitchen in the rear.

Yep, rear

I guess you could say the kitchen is rear since bed is in front. Thanx for all the links, all very informative,
Bessie

That is a danged shame, those layouts are my favorite of all the trailers they've created recently.

So are the FB models having similar problems, because they have the kitchen closer to the back than the front?

We have a 2005 22' CCD and would not trade it for any other Airstream -- that doesn't mean that we would pass up a second aluminum palace, however.

We love this CCD layout that includes a roadside galley, curbside dinette, and rear curbside corner desk. In fact, we loved Christopher C. Deam's design so much that we changed it, slightly. But you can read about our alterations elsewhere.

Concerning the frame, we've experienced some flex that caused the dinette seats to detach from the curbside wall and the floor as well as numerous interior popped rivets on the curbside aft of the door. The trailer was serviced four times during the warranty period (fall 2006-2008), three times at Jackson Center. A 'stiffener' was added rear of the axles, but other wise the corrections were cosmetic, i.e. replacing rivets and using larger bolts. Dinette seats do not attach to the outside wall since the remodel. We've traveled over 3,500 miles since the trailer was worked on, and although we frequently check the frame and always keep our fingers crossed, we've had no attachment nor rivet problems.

This forum is a wonderful resource and through it we have become aware of quite a few Airstream designs with inherent problems even though we don't have them -- rear end sag, looseness at the front where the a-frame attaches, etc. We've also been put in contact with other 22' International owners that have experienced problems similar to ours. We still LOVE our Airstream, and we'll continue to monitor it for problems; we'll keep Airstream informed, and we will fix problems when they do arise.

Here is a link to the 22' International floorplans. The International with the wrap-around kitchen in the rear curbside corner preceded the CCD version that we have. Most of the CCDs were manufactured in 2004 through 2007. Although the specs appear identical except for slight weight differences, one design might be more affected than the other due to the different layout and materials and date of manufacture.

Do the 22ft CCD and the 22ft International have bellypans, or are the frames visible for inspection? I thought I remembered some recent models being made without bellypans.

We are very happy with our 22' CCD. It's a 2002, and we've owned it since 2004. We love the openness of the floor plan and the large streetside galley, all of which works very well for us. Happily, we've had no problem with popped rivets or the dinette seats. Our dinette seats are "old style", and that may make a difference. I will keep an eye on things, and check visually for any cracks in the frame. Also, I think I'll shoot Airstream an email to check on the status of things from their point of view. Thanks for all of the input... as always this forum steps up to the plate!

Just treat them nice

I have a 2002 International 22' . I was worried about the frame and did a pretty good inspection and decided that I do not have the frame problem. I called Airstream support and they said I did not have to worry about getting #131 since it had already been applied.

That said, when you look at where the holding tanks sit on mine, you realize they are hanging there way behind the wheels. So you really don't want to fill them up and drive a distance between campgrounds. I try to keep mine as empty (and light) as possible. Also, there is not much lee way between empty weight and gross weight on the trailer. So there is no sense in loading all the can goods, bottles, dishes etc way back on the trailer. In fact, good, smart, weight distribution would go along way to avoiding problems and keeping your trailer safe.

I also like to put my stabilizer jacks down whenever I park, since they help to support the back end.

And....a big no, no: Never hang bicycles, generators, whatever, off the back of the trailer. That will break them for sure.

There is no belly pan on these, so except for where there are covering tanks you can see all of the frame. Makes it easy to inspect.
