Horizontal vs vertical propane tanks

We're talking about getting a late 90's 34' WB coach, so I've been reading the various ads for them. I've noticed that some coaches have horizontal propane tanks and some have vertical. I've been told that the horizontal tank coaches have quite a bit less interior space than their vertical counterparts due to the tanks intruding into the interior.

Was horizontal or vertical an option in the late 90's, or was it one or the other depending on year? If it was an option, how hard would it be to convert the horizontal tanks to vertical and regain the lost space? If it was one or the other depending on year, which years have the vertical tanks?

Thanks for the help.
