25 ft, 'old width' Excella weight?

Am current ly looking for a 25 ft Excella or Classic. What's the difference in weight between a 94-95 25ft Excellas (Old width), and the current wide body 25 ft Classics? Fog

P.S. Tried the Airstream site, but my puter gags for some reason. Thought somebody who owns these things could lay it on me!

Have you checked out the Airstream Weights and Measures Page on the Airstream website? They have listed the empty weight, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, and hitch weight starting with the 1993 models. The page should give you the comparison information for which you are searching.

Looks like he did & couldn't access it with his computer. Here's what I found out from the website:



'95 Excella - 25'

Dry Weight: 5100 lbs
Tongue Weight: 700 lbs
GVWR: 6800 lbs

'04 Classic - 25'

Dry Weight: 6050 lbs
Tongue Weight: 870 lbs
GVWR: 7300 lbs

I downloaded and was going through all the numbers and couldn't help but notice that the hitch ball height on the '67's are the highest of any other year. Could someone explain that to me why that would be? And what the ramifications might be, if any?

While we're talking about weights - it seems that the trailers get heavier through the years. I was going to buy a 1978 31ft Sovereign - weighs 4800 lb dry, but someone beat me to it. I eventually bought (but haven't actually picked it up) a 94 Excella - 28ft that has a dry weight of 6100 lbs. What's contributing to the extra weight?

I am making a guess here but IIRC the 67's had the old style spring axles but by 68 they had gone to the Torqueflex axles which gave a lower and softer ride. If I am incorrect on this somone let me know. No real ramifications other than making sure that your tow vehicle is set up correctly....

IMO the increased weight was brought on by a change in materials...plywood vs MDO and chip board as well as increases in luxury items along with changes in the standard requirements for RV's in general. My interior fixtures are primarily made of thin plywood and aluminum, not solid oak like a lot of the newer models. No ice makers and wine cellars here Weight was one of the reason's I chose to go with a vintage unit...1975 Sovereign GVW 7100#.

Hey I'm about to post my first reply answering someone elses question (well sort of). I'm not asking a question or thanking someone for answering my question. This must be a significant occassion!

Anyway, I too have noticed that Airstream hitch ball heights peaked in 1967, at least according to the info on the Airstream web site. Not sure if all this data is valid, but I can confirm that my '66 Owners Manual and trailer seem to agree with the '66 hitch ball height posted on the web site (20.5").

I'm not sure what the reason is for the changing heights in the late 1960's, but the switch to the Duratorque axles isn't it, because the changeover occurred well before 1967. I have heard the switch was about 1961 or 1962.

Thanks WahoonC - makes sense. I haven't seen too many older Airstreams, but they were definitely simpler designs.
