Need Help to remove exterior doorhandle and lockset

I am at a loss as to how to remove the exterior door handle and lockset so I can repair the Schlage lock. The lock turns/spins but doesn't engage the deadbolt. On the inside is a thumb latch knob that I can remove but there is no access for removal of the screws that attach the exterior handle to the skin.

If anyone has advice I would appreciate hearing from you.

AZ,

Welcome to the forums.

Sometimes previous owners will change out locksets. I'm not sure if yours is original or changed. If you can post a photo or two of the handle and lock, I bet someone here will be able to help. You can add a photo by clicking on the "Manage Attachments" button, selecting, then uploading a photo. Sometimes you have to first downsize the photo in your photo program so it fits.

Schlage Lockset and exterior door handle

Thank you for the reply to my post. The interior panels are untouched so I doubt this has ever been removed before. The key works and spins the lock but it does not engage the deadbolt. At this point it appears that my only option is to take a hole saw and do a shallow cut to remove the interior tin and expose the screws from the backside.

You need o remove the interior skin to access the back of the lock and handle.

To remove the door handle without removing the interior skin panel you can cut a small hole in the inside skin just behind the points that the handle attaches to the trailer. This gives access to the 2 bolts. You will have the wires for the door bell at the lower hole so don't just yank the handle off.

Once your have made the lock change and reinstalled the handle you can cover the holes with standard 2x4 flush electric box covers. Sorry i can not post a picture to help as i have reached the limit for posting pictures.

I you send me a PM I will send a picture of the finished product..

Thank you for the confirmation. There is literally 3 inches between the door frame and the window, I have a piece of the interior panel that the manufacturer left in a storage area for 26 years. I think I will hole saw the panel and remove the handle then cut a patch out of the material I found and pop-rivet it in place to cover the holes. The interior thumb latch is already attached using a piece of the same material ~ presumably from the factory.....

Hi HowieE, the system won't allow me to submit a PM because I am not a trusted member.
