Anyone know what material this is

This is some kind of a stiff sheet rubber. It's maybe 1/8" thick. These were used on my 92 Excella to cover the openings through the gray and black tank covers where the dump valve handles protrude. I'd like to know what it is and where I can buy some new material to replace these with.

You can actually buy those rubber gaskets premade from places like Inland RV and Outofdoorsmart.com.

If you can get scraps of the rubberish roofing material that is used to re-roof most RVs, that would probably work for a DIY effort. I bought a sheet of rubber from my local hardware store to redo mine, but it didn't hold up real well--dried out and cracked after a year or two. Then again, I don't think those gaskets are expected to last more than a few years.

Update:

Was just out at our 1994 Excella and appears the seals on our trailer are ~3/4" thick closed cell polyethylene foam blocks. Slit so it can go over the rod is obscured in the photo.


Based on the application, I would recommend using what is referred to as minicell foam. 2lb/cubic ft density would be good. Send me a PM. and we can send out a sample large enough to do both seals.

I'd skip the pvc material. It will crack or even shatter when it gets cold.

So I haven't checked with Inland RV but Out of Doors Mart does not have it. They have some kind of a rubber boots for the drain line, but it had a large home in it. I have l located a place that sells rubber sheet goods and the have a neoprene that I've sent them an email with pictures asking for more info. We'll see.

I don't know much about rubber. Can anyone explain the difference between Neoprene and EPDM for instance. Or direct me to a source to become better informed.
Under closer examination, it also appears that there may have been an adhesive backing material on this stuff. It's no longer sticky, but I'll bet it used to be. Pictures of the back side below.

The sticky back was used to hold the material in place while the caulk dried. On our trailer, those rubber pieces were held on with small screws for the same reason.

Except for natural rubber, any of the rubber products shown on this McMaster-Carr page: https://www.mcmaster.com/rubber will work. A bit of double-stick tape will hold them in place until caulk sets up.
