Question Want to add a skylight to my 2002 28' classic

I've called the local Airstream Dealer about getting a quote on installing a skylight in the bathroom of our 2002 28' classic. I want to add some natural light in that area. They were unable to quote me even a ball park on the cost. Said they needed me to bring it up so they could check it out. Too many questions about where the wiring was strung, if they'd have to reinforce it, if it was structurally ready, etc.

Has anyone done this before? If not does anyone have any knowledge about whether the '02 28' was made structurally ready to add a skylight in the bath. It wasn't too long after they started putting them in as standard equipment.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm looking at for cost to have this done?

Thanks,

Any way you cut it, I can't see it being cheap. There are inside skins, outside skins, electric, ribs, etc. Plus, I doubt highly I would even venture to a dealer for something like that. My first choice would be the factory. I would guess $3000 to have an aftermarket dome put in. I would question how well an after the fact would stay sealed, knowing that even the factory installed units leak.

I come up with that price based on a recent interaction with the factory on a request for swapping out a 13.5k unit to a 15k unit. I figure they average $600 for the A/C units which meant that the factory wanted about $1k to put it in (if I picked up the 31 footer I was looking at). There it was a pretty even swap out, with little to no modifications to the roof, compared to what you are talking about.

I'd shoot the factory a question on it and give them your VIN. It may take a few weeks to get a quote, but at least you'll know and you'll also know it would be done as right as it can be....

Not abig deal at all, my guess is under $500 for a fixed (non opening) skylight.

I swear if I keep hearing these telephone numbers to do work on these AS I'm going to go into biz for myself.

extra light

It would be easier and cheaper to add Vista Windows to your trailer. That way you could put them most any place that you wanted.

I've installed a BIG skylight made by SEITZ in Germany.

Go to post #87 on this page of the main thread about the remaking of my 1976 Argosy:
