Baby Pix - 2004 Classic
Hey Everyone,
Look at the baby pictures the factory sent me! Wow, that's my baby! I really like the one from inside with all those exposed alum ribs. I feel like the luckiest man alive!!!
Mitch, an AS customer service tech, sent these to me with a birth announcement. Are these guys great, or what?!!!

Looks great Dee! The interior decorating is a little bit stark for me, though...
I can hardly wait to see it finished!

Awesome!
Really.... I had no idea that the CCD's came in 30 ft sizes! But, I think the wheels need to be a bit bigger, it seem's you ordered the new "rear steer" model?
But reeeaaaalllyyyy, I'm jealous!! How'd they know to send pic's? It looks like an airplane being made up here at Boeing. Also interesting how they cut the door and light openings after the skins are on. I love the big windows, you'll love the light I'm sure.
Enjoy!

Call the FCC or the SPCA
HEY! I'm gonna write somebody...did you see that "naked chassis in the first picture? Someonce needs to call the SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Airstreams) Wonder if that is a Sky Deck in the making?
Dee, looking good! How much longer?

Very Nice, Big Dee -- looks like it is about a week from being completed...
It probably has been through the leak test by now, and is having the wiring/insulation put in...
Nothing like the smell of a new Airstream....enjoy it!!!

Anticipation ... hope for the future combined with eagerness and desire for it all to be in the present. Congratulations Big Dee! What a great looking Airstream! It's so nice that the factory still takes the time to make an order that personal. Definitely would not be getting photos from a Fleetwood order. Thanks for letting us share in your excitement.

Sonograms are fine and all but, I'd rather wait and see if it's a girl or boy on delivery.
Congrats, BIG DEE! You'll have many, many, many years of enjoyment from it!

Well, as has to be expected from me, it shows they must really make a huge profit for sheets of aluminium , pieces of wood and some fabric.
When you see the finished product it looks mysterious & elaborate, but when you see the "making of" one wonders why the price tag is so high. (maybe the pics)
Sure it's nice and well built & will depreciate less than a SOB, but in order not to loose as much hard earned cash, a slightly used unit cushions the fall.
Of course, if nobody bought new, nobody could buy a good used one, so I should stop all this negativity...

I do not know what their margins are at AS, but they have about 300 employees. and they are, for the most part, integrated (they make most of the assemblies save the appliances...and the axles, I think...
They are now making 6 trailers per day, and an unknown number of motorhomes.
If we throw the motorhomes out, they are spending about 50 man-days per trailer, roughly. I know they have part-timers there, and I suspect the number includes service, which should pay for itself...
Any rate, as a rough estimate, there is 10 man-weeks of labor in each Trailer. With overhead and benefits, that is roughly 12K.
I suspect that the plant facility, and materials cost for a Safari is at least as much as the Labor rate, so that would be about 24K per trailer. I suspect that this is low...and a classic with its deluxe interior components is a lot higher cost in components.
I bet the margins are pretty decent, but they are not huge -- I bet the margins, if good, are on the order of 15%.
Again, just a guess. Like a house, the structure is the fast part...
