I need to add a gray water tank

Has anyone done a tank that goes on either side of the frame like the fresh tank? Is there space to do that? I haven't removed the belly pan behind the axles to see.

That seems to be the best place to put it and would require the least amount of re-plumbing the shower and sinks.

Having a custom tank made is not a problem. I think I would rather have it go inside the frame rails rather than hanging below. Something similar to the way the fresh tank is held in shouldn't be difficult.

It seems like having the gray tank empty to the black tank and then out would be best for cleaning out the system.

I've seen some complicated gray water additions. I'm looking for the best solution that will work without complications. Thanks.

In your sovereign, you could probably use an exact duplicate of the freshwater tank (if yours is the same as what they put in '73), and support it the same way; you'd have to cut out one x-member, and replace it with a single piece of angle-iron...the tank is notched to fit that arrangement. The tanks are available from Inca plastics.
If not that, you can certainly use the tanks from VTS...I squeezed 2 into my 23-footer. You've got way more space to work with...no "squeezing" required.

Thanks Chuck. Are those gray tanks about 25 gallons each? I guess I could get away with just one. I think my black tank is 21 gallons so that puts me close to my 50ish fresh water tank.

I was hoping someone here would know if those back bays are clear or if there's something running through them.

We installed two gray tanks in our '72 Sovereign. One is directly above the rear axle, and the second one is in the space behind the rear axle. I would hesitate going further back as that puts a lot more weight behind the axles, and those early 70 frames are just not all that strong to support 3 full tanks totally behind the axels. A concern if you ever have to travel with both gray and the black tank pretty full.

I ganged the two gray tanks together below the belly pan with the drain to the dump valve. I built my own tanks, but the VTS 21 gallon (55" x 21" x 5") match the size of my smaller gray tank, and it fits inside the belly pan completely. VTS didn't have them when I was in need of them.

Eric- I don't think the cassette toilet will work for me. I need a tank that'll hold about 14 days boondocking.

There are a couple of guys near me that will make a custom size tank for about ⅔ the price of the VTS tank and no extra charge for fittings. They are probably the same people that make the tanks for VTS.

So I'll probably mount it similarly to the fresh tank, closest to the back axle. Now I just need to figure out how I want it plumbed. I'd prefer to tie it into the black tank so it will help flush that out but I don't think that is possible because I need a valve below the floor. I'd also like to use the same vent as the black tank and that probably won't be difficult.

We tied the gray and black tank vents together, and it works fine. My recommendation is to tie them together at a level that's above the toilet. That way you're insured to never have black tank stuff spilling into the gray tank via the vent.

Vintage Trailer Supply sells them (repro of OE) & they're an advertiser on here. IIRC they're 16 gals each for the 60s-70s under floor-between 4" frame rails flavor.

They are polypropylene so you'll need to get stainless steel straps or stirrups to hold 1-2 in between the AS floor frames.

I'll be doing one in our `60 Avion T20 - assuming they fit between its frame rails - whenever I remove the belly pan for re-riveting.

Whoooeee. That's long. Maybe if you peed outside and cut back on the fiber?
