When to add oil?

In checking the oil for the Mercedes engine, the dip stick shows "Max" and "Min". Is it a quart low at the "Min" setting? I am about half way in between and don't want to overfill, but do want to add a quart when it is needed.

Typically on most vehicles the min line is equal to one quart low. Since this beast holds almost 13 quarts, I wouldn't worry about 1pint low. Also be sure the vehicle is on the level and cool when checking it to ensure an accurate reading.

Interestingly enough, mine didn't even come with a dipstick. The oil level is measured electronically when you move the ignition key to the "accessory" position and toggle through the dashboard display menus to "oil level" and wait a few seconds before you start the engine. I could purchase my own dipstick from the dealer, but the electronic measurement hasn't been wrong yet that I could tell.

I know the tranny doesn't have a dipstick but you can buy one. The oil dipstick is rather hard to find but I'm betting there's one there. Mine is on the curb side of the engine and is partially hidden by some hoses.

I too find it hard to believe that you do not have an engine oil dipstick. MB also has an 'oil level too high' warning that is very sensitive versus the 'full' mark on the dipstick. My warning came on frequently and oil level was right at full on the dipstick. I siphoned out 1 cup and the warning went off and stayed off.
