Water Capacities issue

We have a new Interstate. Seems I read that Fresh Water capacity was 26g and Gray Water was 27g. Why does gray fill up in one day--no showers--while fresh water lasts 3 days.

Are you sure the gray water tank is full or are you going by the gauge?

Maybe the gray water tank wasn't empty to begin with.

I think you're way off on that, tho don't know the specifics on your unit

Ours holds about 30 gallons fresh water, 10 gallon grey tank, 20 gallon black.

Most of us use water sparingly, also dishpans that can be dumped into the toilet, which will stretch out that grey tank capacity.

Yeah, my gauge says it's full long before it really is full. I doubt it's half full when the gauge says it's full. When water comes up in the shower, I know the greywater tank is really full.

I have used that method myself a few times

The total fresh water capacity is 32 gallons including 6 gallons in the water heater.
However, the sensors are crudely glued onto the outside of the tanks and are far from accurate. If it's very bad you might want to ask the dealer to reposition them. A couple of mine fell off and had to be glued back on anyway.

It holds 32 gallons. You can still only use 26 gallons. Once the freshwater tank runs dry, there's no water coming from the pump into the water heater so there's no water coming out of the water heater, either, even though it's still full.

By the way, newer-model Interstates have Hepvo check valves in place of P-traps. If you overfill the gray tank, whatever drain you're using at the time will be the one to back up because water trying and failing to flow down will hold the valve open, and water trying to back up in the other drains will hold those valves closed. That means if you overfill the gray tank from the galley sink, the galley sink backs up, but the shower doesn't.

That's actually very convenient, since it minimizes the chance for overflows onto the floor.

Straight out of my manual, 26 gallons fresh + 6 gallons in water heater; 27 gallons gray; 16 gallons black; propane 14 gallons at 78% full. Interstates based on the Sprinter 3500 chassis have the tanks in a different place than on the Sprinter 2500 models, so sizes can be different.

Actually that explains why I had an overflow into the galley sink and not the shower floor - when my better half closed the galley sink lid on the faucet in the hot position and the lid opened the faucet; and since the noisy AC was running, we didn't notice until it DID overflow onto the floor!

I had all the fresh water sensors fall off during my first outing! The gauge always reads empty. I zip tied them up to the mounting brackets so they didn't drag the ground. Fortunately the water pump lets me know when I'm out of fresh water (LOL) and the fill tube overflows when I'm full.

But I refill fresh each time I empty black/grey - better to run out of fresh water than over fill the dump tanks!

Maybe I'll get out to silicone them back on today since it is supposed to be 70 here in IL . . . but the current system works so well.

It is a 2015 Interstate EXT. Where can we see these tank sensors that may be falling off?

The tank (on 13/14) is white plastic under the driver side between the driver seat and propane tank.

The sensors on mine were about 1" x 3" black plastic with wire coming from them.

They were on the rear side of tank and completely covered with what looked to be silicone caulk/adhesive when attached.

Should be spaced apart at 3rds or fourths.

A couple of pictures of one of my tank sensors that fell off and was trailing on the ground. Apparently Airstream didn't adequately clean the outside of the tank when they glued them on.

No argument there. But sensors falling off a tank doesn't make the product crap. The generator falling off, on the other hand…

Well the generator exhaust clamps fell off and the black tank flush check valve was installed backwards allow w/ a myriad of other things on mine does not lead me to believe that product quality is in Airstream's vocabulary.
