Van or Motor Home?

Interesting issue came up while camping this past weekend. CG has a rule: no pets allowed in tents, truck campers or conversion vans. We had our dog with us so I called our AI a motor home - which AS uses as its term. Didn't have a problem but I was wondering what others call their units because at times it seems to make a difference.

I have never heard of such a thing in 8+ years of ownership.

Are you talking about pets being left in these?

That might make sense, although not for truck campers of for conversion vans, which is technically what our Interstates are.

I call mine a conversion van for parking reasons.

I call my rig a car; a truck; a passenger van; a camper van; a motorhome or an RV depending on who is asking or the situation I'm in. 😎

Mike, I think you are dead on. Last month I wanted to camp in a CG that only allows motorhomes - no trailers (which when I'm towing my 31' classic I take offense at), no tents, no vans, no pop-ups. Upon registering I called my AI a 24' motorhome and had no problems at all once I reached the CG. Perhaps instead of stressing over it I should just embrace the opportunity to call it what I want!

Thanks for the heads up - I had never heard of this. I was under the impression that the main dog exclusion issue was whether or not you were on PUBLIC property, especially national parks; I never even thought about PRIVATE properties.

(Maybe for another thread: Do all national parks categorically exclude dogs? Big Bend does. The stated rationale is that the introduction of canine scent would be disruptive to the ecosystem. This lofty reasoning despite there being a resident coyote population in the hundreds if not thousands. Don't even get me started.).

We do winter travel with our dog, sometimes leaving her in the Interstate for a few hours here or there (e.g., football games). Fortunately she is not a fit-pitcher (no barking in our absence) so nobody would even know that she was in there.

I've seen a lot of parks that allow dogs, but they have to be on a lease.

so I guess if you own the dog, you can't bring it in.

There's a screening process going on

A Class B is a motorhome. It is a van made into a motorhome by the addition of systems. These systems include self contained water management, cooking and refrigeration equipment, heating and cooling systems and the ability to handle shore power. What some CGs try to exclude are regular vans or possibly old custom conversion vans that people want to sleep in. Some ( a few) of these vans may have a 110VAC roof air conditioner, but that's usually the only RV accessory. You would be surprised to learn of the intent of some people in regards to getting into a CG. Here I'm talking about some rowdies who want a cheap place to have a drunken blow out and don't actually own an RV, but maybe a van. Believe me, I've seen it and didn't want to be in the adjacent site.

Some CG owners have found that certain types of vehicles may be associated with people that don't suit the primary customer base of the CG. That leads to the Class A only policies.

"trailers, tents, vans, pop-ups" are less expensive vehicles than Class A MHs; so there is a socio-economic screening going on here. I've seen the screening apply more to the last 3, but I've found CGs that don't want my Class B, nor a trailer either.

My motto: "I pity the fool who buys a Class A". This motto is proudly displayed on my Class B. [motto, tip of the hat to Mr. T] Maybe that could also apply to a CG that "only wants Class A MHs".

Let's Roll !

When I'm making reservations and they ask what I have, I just call it an Airstream, of course!
