Tire rotation on Airstream Interstate

I have a question about tire rotation. Is there any possible way to rotate your dually tires on an Airstream Interstate without removing the actual tire off your polished aluminum rims? I notice any time one tries to rotate the tires, you're exposing the corroded inner rim. I have called around to different service departments and everyone has a different answer. I am sure someone on this forum has come across this situation. I get the impression you really can not rotate your tires without exposing the inner ugly/corroded rim? I look forward to your reply. Thank you!

If you have any Interstate with duals, you must remove the tires from the rims to rotate them. Outer rear, inner rear, and front rims are not interchangeable with each other.

In fact, I'm not even sure the spare is interchangeable with anything but inner rear rims, either; I've thankfully never had a flat tire (yet) so I've never actually tried using the spare in place of any aluminum rim.

I'm pretty sure the rear duels are all interchangeable.. The inner rims are just turned around at least that was how they were on my other b van..

I had the unfortunate situation of having two flat tires and this particular van did not have a spare..

One tire was an inner and the second was an outer.. I took the outer off and put that in the coach, took the good inner and moved it to the outer position.. The other side I left the flat inner in place and lucky for us there was a Firestone around the corner that had the tires we needed..

This was a Saturday around 3 o clock in Patterson NJ..

Hello Mr Protagonist, Thank you for your reply. How often do you actually do the rotation of tires by removing the tires off the rims? I was thinking every 7,000 miles or so...Is that over doing it? Thanks

Hello Mjgman,
I believe doing what you are saying will exposing the inner ugly/corroded rim. That's the one thing I'm trying to prevent.

We had ours rotated at 27,000 miles. I think you're supposed to do it when your Service B is due, but we were on the road, and didn't want to do it then. Not sure what they did with the rims, but, our look just fine.

With the Alcoa wheels on the Interstate you must remove the tires from rims to do a normal rotation. You could do a simple side swap rotation, but I don't know how much good that would do. Rotating tires by removing them from the rims defeats any potential savings from rotation. I also have dually valves on my tires so there is two reasons I don't bother to rotate my tires.

The spare on your Interstate Sprinter will fit on any wheel position. I've had a flat and the spare was useful. Those B-vans delivered without a spare just and to the drama if you ever get a flat.

I'm not the expert, but I think that's overdoing it. I've only rotated my van's tires once in three and a half years (23000 miles so far), when the wheels were off anyway for brake service. I probably won't do it again; as others have said, the expense isn't worth it.

If the tires show even wear, there's no point in rotating them, because they'll wear evenly after rotating them as well. If the tires show uneven wear, your money is better spent finding out why, and fixing the problem.

Instead of rotating the tires, just have them rebalanced.

Agree. We had unevenly worn tires on the front. So, we had all tires rotated, and got an alignment.

One more reason I love my "OLD" Interstate. 5 tires total and none of the dually problems, of course it's only 22 feet long, doesn't use DEF , only has 5 cylinders, and only gets 21 to 22 miles per gallon, and only has a 3-way refrigerator, and looks more like an ambulance than a limousine. No I am not jealous, I really like my lighter weight Interstate with a couple thousand dollars of upgrades. Thank you all for suggesting all those changes and upgrades, at this point I would not do an even trade for a NEW INTERSTATE. O, did I mention it fits in my driveway, and parks like a car in "on street parking".

The phrase "to each his own" seems particularly appropriate hereÖ

Ron. I really think Airstream has done a great job with all the EDITIONS of their fabulous Interstates and really would be happy with any that were UPGRADED like the suggestions on this forum. This was not a "ding" on any of them.
