Ticking sound coming from battery box area

Ticking sound coming from battery box area

Hello. There is A ticking sound coming from the area in which the main battery switch is located. I believe it has something to do with the propane. When the propane shut off valve is turned to off, there is no noise. However when I turn it on, the ticking is heard once again. Any help? I need to add that it is a 2014 airstream interstate

Is this when ever the propane is turned on or only while you are using, a gas flow, propane with anything in the unit.

Howie, I hear the noise even when I am not using a gas flow. I tried running the stovetop burner to see if it would make a difference, and there was no difference.

Do you have Solar? If so it could be the Solar Controller cycling on and off which is normal.

Is it a ticking or a clicking sound? And what's the frequency? If you're parked in the sun, the solar controller clicks every 4 minutes, I think.
Update - Mcrider, you beat me to it!

It was a constant clicking. Like a ticking time bomb. I noticed the house battery was almost dead and since then connected it to shore power and it stopped after it got charged, so I'm happy about that, but curious as to why. Thanks for your help!

Could it be related to this same root cause?

OP has a late model Interstate and so it should have a fully-electric fridge, right? So it should NOT be a fridge piezo mis-firing?

As you both said, yes, the solar controller clicks. Ours certainly does, and much more frequently than every 4 minutes. It can be a bit unnerving. I always know when a passing cloud is imminent because the frequency changes before I even see a shadow.

However, we also had an issue (before my husband adjusted it) of the solar surcharging the refrigerator slightly. He measured voltages and it was well within the stated tolerances for that kind of Dometic. But it would trigger the danged piezo in a disconcerting manner, even if the gas was already ignited. Click, click, click until I wanted to say STFU.

Anywhere else there could be a piezo in the OP's model of Interstate?

When I had that same problem, Airstream replaced the BIM and then the solar controller to fix it. Since the BIM replacement didn't help, I'm betting on the solar controller. If you're out of warranty and your model uses the PVCM25D Charge Controller, call Atkinson Electronics. I talked w/ Robert Kendal and explained my problem (which the second time was different than the first). He sent me a new one and only asked that I return the old one for failure analysis. Wished all companies had that kind of customer service.

Here's my thread dealing w/ this problem. Good luck w/ solving.

If the house batteries are completely discharged or disconnected, the BIM will cycle as well. I discovered that when I disconnected the house battery to work on it. I had to disconnect the coach battery to stop it from cycling.

Agee it could be the BIM if batteries are discharged or disconnected. I've also got the BIM into this cycling mode with house batteries disconnected.

Sorry, but for the acronym-challenged: What's a 'BIM'?

Battery Isolation Module. A solenoid that connects the house batteries and the starting battery together so they can both charge from the same source, or isolates the house batteries from the chassis battery when there is no charging source in order to keep the chassis battery from being drained along with the house batteries.

I had a propane regulator sound like a water drip on a tin pan. Early morning, running the refer on gas, drove me nuts. I finally got up and looked for the source.
Feel the regulator when it is ticking, if you feel it, you found it. Not an automatic fail, just a cold burp of gas thru the diaphragm. I swapped mine out on noise alone.
