Tank Heater Matt Detached

Has anyone had the tank heater matt become detached? One edge, forward of the tank retainer strap, has become detached and I have tried different adhesives to hold it in place with no long term luck. I have not tried double sided automotive trim tape yet, but it is next unless someone can guide me differently.

I would not recommended VHB tape as it adds a bit of insulation between the heating pad and the tank. These heaters don’t get that warm so it would likely degrade the performance.

ROAD JAGER - as previously stated by GMILLEROK1 double sided TRIM tape is too thick. But other types of THINNER double sided tape works better. See recommendations on this recent post

My tank heaters on both grey and fresh water tanks were hanging down. I sprayed contact cement on the mat and on the tank, let set for the required time and put together.

Has lasted for 2 years and 24000 miles.

We don't have tank heating pads on our 2016 28FC but our fresh water tank became partially detached and dragged below trailer during a road trip.

Airstream said it is a known issue and is fixing it at their cost even though it is out of warranty.

Airstream of Utah did partial repairs so we could use the fresh water system again. We didn't have time for complete repairs there so we have an appointment at the factory to finnish the repair.

Airstream has been great at supporting their product while we are traveling halfway across the country from home.

Mine came undone during the first trip... I used 3M Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive and then some black gorilla tape (same as duct tape) around it... still in place.


Yes, dealer will do it under warranty... I did not have the time to waste waiting for them for such a simple fix. If the actual pad had been damaged, yes, then I would have taken it to get it repaired...

As others have mentioned, I used the Permagasket (as recommended on this forum when I posted the same problem last year). http://www.airforums.com/forums/f240...ad-182090.html Then I used Gorilla Tape on the leading edge just to ensure it stays in place.


Clean dirt from the detached portion of the pad & tank (don't worry about removing all existing glue), apply the Permagasket and figure a way to hold it in place. I used an inflatable bladder to hold pressure from below over night. If you want to do the Gorrilla tape too, go ahead. You may want to use it on the leading edge of your remaining tank pads since that is where they tend to detach.
