Surge Protector

Does anyone use a surge protector? What type do you use. I use an EMS-PT30C by Progressive Industries. Great thing is it has a lifetime Warranty.

This is a subject of polar opposite opinions, but I believe the Low/High voltage protection is the more important and more often needed benefit.

One caveat about that lifetime warranty… It only covers defects in materials and workmanship. A surge protector is good for exactly one surge, and in the process of protecting against the surge, it commits ritual suicide. At that point, it must either be discarded or returned to the manufacturer to be serviced. Since a surge is an act of God, not under control of the manufacturer, the warranty won't cover that service.

That said, I have the Progressive Industries SSP-30, similar to yours but without all the bells and whistles. Since it's a cheaper model, I won't feel bad if I have to throw it away after it stops a surge.

I have used a TRC unit for many years. Ten or twelve years ago a unit that was blown was repaired at no cost with no time limit. Five years or so ago a blown unit was replaced at half the cost of a new one. I always check with the factory if a unit blows for replacement programs or incentives to upgrade.

I use the same model as yours. One time I was at a campground and just after I hooked up not far away flames were shooting up out of the ground. Apparently, the main electric line shorted out. At another campground, the Progressive unit informed me that the hot was reversed and no ground was present. It certainly made me believer out of me to use one of these devices.

A few years ago after we bought our new fiver, we learned the hard way that the dealer had not installed the surge protector as instructed. Two days later we experienced a surge after plugging into a reputable CG utility pole. ( the breaker was off when we plugged in )

FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS LATER......with a deductible of 500.00....we continued on our journey....the surge fried wiring and equipment.....unbelievable damage.

It can happen to anyone. I double check the wiring on every utility pole we use!

TRC for us as well - we like the over / under protection. You can not plan for who will be plugging in next to you or what havoc an errant electrical storm might cause.

No. There are plenty of more valuable items around a campground that can't be locked, either, like satellite dishes, and yet no one walks off with them. I considered the chance of theft to be sufficiently small that it wasn't worth the extra money for a lockable one.

We also use the TRC Surge Guard...the older version without the readout... We do use a small padlock to lock down the cover of the utility pole if it's possible to do so ... but if it's not possible we don't worry about it too much... It's alerted to issues a couple of times.
