A clockwise loop of some of the US starting and ending in our home in Central NJ with stops in VA, TN, TX, MO, KS, CO, UT, NV, CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, SD, IA, IL, OH, PA.

Whew, I know its a lot. But It's something we've wanted to do for a while and want to do it before the kids get too old and don't want to do it. I'll certainly have time to quiz all you veterans

Besides the dozens of weekend trips we are planning a 3 week trip from ME and doing the Skyline Drive, then the Blue Ridge Parkway, a few days in the Great Smokies NP, then a few more days in DC and finally will meander back home to ME.

I'm planning a trip from VA to OR and back in August. Rushmore, Yellowstone, and other sites.

Heading back to east Texas, to work on a property we plan to retire to. Last summer we put in an 800' x 30' high dam to flood 17 acres on 122 total acres. Planning on putting in a stable road to get the RV onto the property, two RV pads, full hookups, and a barn. The AI will be working hard!

As long as no wetlands are destroyed, they won't care…

And therein lies the problem.

Here's a quote from the Washington Post on March 25, 2014 discussing a proposed EPA rule:

"All ephemeral and intermittent streams, and the wetlands that are connected or next to them, will be subject to federal oversight under the proposed rule. The agency is asking for public input on whether to require federal permits for a group of “other waters,” mainly wetlands such as those in the prairie pothole region."

I'm guessing that K9CarCrate dammed up either a ephemeral and intermittent stream to create his 17 acre lake.

Federal permits for construction in wetlands areas are issued and periodically reviewed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, with input from EPA, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and others.

One of the key factors in determining the presence of wetlands is the presence of wetlands species— plants and/or animals that constitute a wetlands ecosystem. It there were no wetland species present, as determined by a Corps of Engineers biologist, then it's not a wetland for regulatory purposes even if it meets the geological or hydrological definition otherwise.

Also, proposed rule-making is never retroactive. While the rule might prevent such private reservoir-building in the future, it cannot make an existing reservoir illegal. K9CarCrate got his lake built just in time.

I used to work at the Corps of Engineers, and knew several biologists whose job was wetlands determination in conjunction with approving or denying permits. I'm not a biologist, so I might have some details wrong, but I'm pretty sure I got the gist of the matter correct. But if I did get something wrong, speak up! I'm always willing to learn from those who know.

You guys are funny about my lake. Didn't mean to trigger an EPA/legal discussion so please let's end this now. No laws were broken. Go travel this summer! 😊

Covered almost every state last year West of PA on a seven week trip, going to do similar trip but this year include Oregon, Washington and California. Not sure if late spring or late summer. All depends on our Pet Rescue and how it is progressing and if we can secure another volunteer trainer and rehabilitator or not. If not, simply unsure of where or when.

Enjoy

Summer's too far away. I'm already traveling this winter! And this spring, etc. One of the advantages of living in the south…

Hereabouts we call that a "stock tank". find a low spot in your property, rent a dozer, throw up a earthen berm and pray for rain..... voila, instant lake.
