Strange shade issue

Last evening I pushed the down button to lower all of our night shades at once. All went down but one. Didn't move at all. So I pushed the up button to start again. The other shades went up and that one shade went down. After playing with them a while and getting the same results I just operated that shade separately from the others. Before this happened that shade wasn't stuck or anything else that would hint at a problem.
Ideas on how to get them back in harmony?

Nothing in the owner's manual on syncing the shades?

Owners manual? What's an owners manual?😁
Honestly, it never occurred to me to check - which I will do when we camp tonight.

Just a guess. Get them all in the same state (closed or open), then shut off the power. Wait a while. Power back on and see what happens.

Based on what you are saying, the shades operate in "toggle" mode which allows the control system to get confused. They should have discrete inputs for open/close.

I know that when I have to read the manual, it's like admitting defeat.

There are many ways to use an owner's manual…

Read it beforehand.
Read it afterward.
Use it to prop up a short table or chair leg.
Use it as a big coaster for coffee cups.
And so on…

This should help. You may need to reprogram that one shade

Random shade issues

We just dropped off our 2017 AI back at the dealer with a multitude of issues including this issue. Thank you so much for providing this information. I don't believe it was included in my packet of operating instructions. This should definitely be included in every operating manual.

Shade Issue Re-visit

Since my original post these things have happened. Didn't want to make a trip to JC just to fix shades. Friend who is an AS owner and lives locally - and is a very handy guy - contacted the maker of these shades, "Auto-Motion Shade, Inc." They were terrific to work with, first guiding us over the phone in reprogramming the shades. Didn't work, so shipped replacement parts at no charge to repair two of the shades. (Both of these were the night shades over the twin beds.)

My friend made the repairs and all worked fine for a while - I'd say about 20 to 30 "up and downs" of the shades. Then, not only did those two shades break again, but both the sunscreen and the night shade in the sliding door broke at the same time. They are both stuck in position a few inches from the top.

So, this weekend we are driving to JC to have them repaired again. I asked the rep at JC how many times they would replace these motors. He said until our warranty ran out (2018) and, of course, how many times we're willing to make the trip. I told him that it was clear from the postings on this forum that there is a real problem with these motors and is Airstream working on either an alternative motorized shade, or perhaps a manual shade instead. He said no.

If you look at the manual from Auto-Motion Shade you see that they also make a manual shade. My husband and I would actually prefer a manual shade and believe that one would fit and look fine as a replacement to the motorized shade. I'm going to call AS back and ask them if they can refit with the manual shade instead of replacing the motorized unit but I have a feeling I already know what the answer will be.

When I picked up my used 2014.5, the fellow who gave me the walk through commented that I was super lucky not to have the motorized shades. That dealer (Camper Clinic II) has had nothing but trouble with them.

He tells folks with the motorized shades to simply treat them as manual shades and they will have a lot less trouble.

Seems to reinforce my feelings that the propensity for AS to add more more and more power gadgets has its downside. I like "simple, but first rate quality!"

Replacement Shades

I saw this link in another post about replacing AI shades with roller shades; http://mcdinnovations.com/

If you can't get the motorized ones squared away, this might be an option for you.

How do you treat these as manual shades? I'd love to do that but you can't just grab them and roll them up and down. You'd have to force them thereby breaking them. Unless I'm missing something?
