Sewer Hose Reel

On our 2016 Grand Tour, the electric hose reel will not run. The fuse is good. When the retract switch is activated a low humming sound can be heard, but the reel does not turn.

I read four different threads on the forum. None had the same situation I described above. I wondering if anyone else had a similar situation and what was done to resolve it.

Try pulling some of the hose back out. It is possible that the hose is "bound up" due to too much overlap in one area. The humming sound indicates the motor is getting power. If the gears are stripped you should be able to push it back in regardless.

Thanks, I pulled 100% of the hose out. It made no difference. The Airstream service manual has the part number for the hose reel, but does not have a picture. I will call Jackson Center and ask questions.

An update:

Airstream does not have a diagram of the hose reel in any parts manual.

The hose reel is manufactured by Technology Research Corporation which was purchased by Southwire. Steve is their tech support for hose reels. His contact info:

Steve Guarcello
Technical Support
Southwire Company, LLC

Phone 727-812-0578
Email stephen.guarcello@southwire.com
Website: https://rvpower.southwire.com

Steve said if you can hear the motor running but the reel does not turn, it is likely the cotter pins which secure the clutch mechanism have fallen out. Replace them using permanent lock tight.

Southwire has a rebuild kit which replaces the clutch eliminating the cotter pins and replacing the solenoid. Steve said cost was around $100.

MandR - Thanks for the info. Appreciate the effort to post the four pages of the retro kit instructions. Could you also post the original PDF file since some of the images you posted have menu from your phone covering part of the instructions.

Thanks,

I have a 2017 AI and the exact thing happened to me. I also called the real company. I had Airstream in Billings MT replace the 6 pins that had dislodged. It worked great for two weeks. And then it broke again. Our next step will be the kit you described. Interesting that we were actually able to coil the entire hose manually into that small external space and we are using it as is. Thank you for posting the details in the repair kit.

The tech advisor at Southwire said that when replacing the pins to make sure you use permanent lock tight or the pins will likely come out again.

We have a 2016 Grand Tour. I tried taking the motor cover off while still mounted on the Interstate. I could not reach the top bolts securing the cover. I now have the hose reel apart on my work bench.

My hose reel operating mechanism is as pictured on page 1 of 4. In the bottom of the cover I found four of the six pins. One was still in the reel coupler, but had retracted and would no longer engage the large sprocket. The sixth pin was jammed behind the motor.

The reel coupler is made of plastic. Two of the six pin holes were damaged when the pins came out of the holes as the reel turned. After disassembly and inspection I decided the coupler damage rendered the part unusable.

I ordered the retrofit kit from Marysville Marine, 800.621.1271, cost $86.85 includes tax and UPS ground shipping.

Update:

In the retrofit kit, the reel coupler is made of cast aluminum. The pins which engage the reel are molded as an integral part of the coupler itself. The kit was easy to install. Reel works well.
