Used idea from another forum member and used a chrome sink tail piece for the exhaust tip. The sound changed to a more pleasant purr instead of pop.

Nice work - I need to do the same thing.

Have you put some sort of vibration damping in the generator mount? That made a HUGE difference for us.

I have the resonator but not installed yet. Maybe this week. I have read a few posts on the improvement with mounts but have not read details. Any more info? What mounts did you buy? What was the general process for upgrade/replacement?

Another member, MCRIDER has put dampers on the mounting bolts and documented in a thread on this forum. Search his recent posts; he made an update.

We took our to Bob Jones RV in Houston. They put the kind of rubber matting used in horse trailers between the generator and van frame. Works great. We can run the generator and have conversations in normal voice. It is much quieter than the A/C.

Got my resonator installed (welded on) at my local muffler shop for $50. When he gave me the bill, I involuntarily blurted out "Is that all?". Agree the sound is only a little quieter, but more pleasing as you describe above. For under $100, glad I did it.

The resonator is a very tight slip fit over the existing tailpipe. It can be held by $2.00 U-clamps, and thus no need to pay $50 to weld it. The slip fit is so tight that a bit of rust will probably make it a permanent installation, whether you wanted it to be permanent or not.

I have been reluctant to put rubber washers in the mounting bolts for fear that the bolts may loosen. Too little torque on the rubber and the bolts could work loose. Too much torque and you squish the rubber so much that it is not doing any good. How do you arrive at a happy medium? Or am I over-thinking this? (Wouldn't be the first time I did that!)

Use 2 nuts on each clamp leg and torque them hard against each other. They will not move. You can even use 2 nuts with a lock washer between if the clamp leg is long enough.

My resonator would not slip over the existing tail pipe without some work. The "inner" weld seam in the resonator was a bit thick and would have required some filing. I know the muffler shop and knew they wouldn't charge much, but it was even cheaper than I thought since they had the van on the rack for a little over an hour. They also fixed an exhaust shield rattle while they were under there.

Even if I could do it myself, I like the ideal of welded connection at both end for preventing even a slight chance of exhaust leakage under the van. I didn't have it welded because I was worried clamps wouldn't hold it securely.

Pahaska,
Your double-nut answer suggests that the generator is connected to studs or bolts, with nut(s) on the bottom end. I was assuming that I was screwing a bolt into something. Thanks for the explanation.

I was referring to a U-shaped muffler clamp. There is almost always enough threaded length to double-nut each side.

Ok, then back to my original question. If you inset rubber washers onto the generator mounting bolts, how do you insure that the bolts do not loosen?

TITUS - If I am understanding your question, if the nuts are threading into a threaded stud, then as JOHN said, 2 nuts torqued against each other. Put 1st nut on, then 2nd nut butt up to 1st. Then back-torque 1st nut into 2nd nut. If you torque it tight enough, will never loosen. Also what JOHN said with lock washer if you want more. You can also LOCTITE it for more. Theres more you can do but man, that maybe overkill for gen bolts.

If you are inserting a bolt into a threaded insert with your rubber washer, the Loctite the threads. Get the strongest formulation that would still allow breaking the bond if need to disassemble

Too hot and humid to go outside and try to determine if the exposed (bottom) side of it is a bolt head or a nut.

Hi,
I have the resonator and clamps and I'm ready to install it but have one question. Is it better to install it closer to the generator or the end of the exhaust pipe?

Thanks!

I mounted it in the middle and it seems to be fine there. I don't think sound wise it will make any difference. There is nothing under there to obstruct it.
