Propane: where do you buy it?

Just where do you go to get the propane tank filled? I have had mor that my share of trouble filling jut you normal bar-b-que tanks filled at various gas stations. What do you look for to be sure those filling you tank know what they are doing and are not just 16 year old kid that pumps gas?

I usually go to my local Ace Hardware; their procedure is to walk inside to the desk and ask for Propane, at which point I request someone experienced with filling an RV.

Pilot flying J. Very quick, many locations. They have an RV card that saves 10 cents a gallon. Also Amish stores have very inexpensive LPG.

Many KOA campgrounds sell propane, and you don't have to stay at the KOA to buy propane there.

Many U-Hauls also sell propane. Where I live, there are two U-Hauls that are very convenient for buying propane.

All fifty states require that persons who dispense propane by the gallon be state-licensed. Liquid propane is a hazardous material and improper handling can cause frostbite to the guy handling the hose. You shouldn't ever get a 16-year-old kid who doesn't know what he's doing. If he doesn't know what he's doing, he'll be missing some fingers very soon. Instant karma.

I use a local Cenex (propane retailer) outlet store near our storage facility in Port Orchard WA. Propane and farm/feed outlet with an expert propane staff who I think could handle this stuff blind folded. And great prices!

Hi Bemu36:

Marvelous camp grounds near you, along the Columbia River and the Oregon Coast. One of my favorite areas for summer camping.

I usually look in the yellow pages under Propane for a supplier and take my tank to him. In a pinch Walmart will do an exchange tank with you but it must be the barbecue size. They only fill their tanks a 1/4 to 1/2 full but charge for a full tank. It's quick and easy if your hurting and need it.

In Ontario, Costco have by far the best price, and their people are well-trained, from my experience.

Given that the OP has an Interstate with a built-in ASME tank, information about places that do cylinder exchange aren't terribly useful in this instance. We Interstate owners have to go to places that dispense propane, not sell or exchange cylinders.

Your info is useful info for trailer owners, but this is the "Sprinter and B-van" sub-forum. That's not a criticism, just an observation; I've posted in threads without paying attention to the sub-forum before, too.

Around here the big U-Haul/U-Store dealers all have propane and have been knowledgeable in going about filling the tank.

I have used our local U-Haul for propane in the past, but is was a very busy and cramped place. This time I called a local propane company and got a fill-up for $3.39/gal.

I filled one of our propane tanks at a Costco in Phoenix, AZ; and I think it was $2.39 per gallon, with no minimum. (Some places have a minimum charge, regardless of how little you buy.)

The attendant said that most of their business is from hot air balloons. They buy at Costco; because Costco is cheapest, and they use a lot of propane.

I get it from Camping World as they have 50% off days every mid-week. It last cost me $11-12 for a 30lb fill up.

All very easy for you all with campers. You've got portable tanks. This message board is about the Airstream Interstate which is a Mercedes camper and our tank is permanently attached underneath the body of the van. We have to drive somewhere that they pump it in and measure it by the gallon, not weight. A little different than draggin portable tanks to a place where they may weigh the tank or they may just charge by the size of the tank.
